RE: Week 22 - ITF $50K - Eastbourne, UK Grass

Shame for Em. That was Océane's first pro match on grass. If Em hadn't been having a torrid time in Korea up until a couple of days ago, she may well have beaten her . .

Now it's up to Naomi B tomorrow . . .

Not quite. Oceane's game is well suited to grass. It is usually all about her - finding the court consistently with her non-stop aggressive style. She is top 150 in less than a year (from 700+) due to her big game, which always comes with high risk, which they accept.

Yes, I agree with you tennislover and know Océane's game well. She was a pick last year when in the qualis and went on to have some great results in England. (Seems a long time ago now that she beat Charlotte Pearce....)

But I think she was nervous/excited about playing on the grass, as any young player would be in her first game.

And though she will probably be great on grass soon, she may well have found it tricky this time round, and there was therefore a chance for Emily to create an upset. Océane's also just come from an intensive clay court practice month (wanting to really perform at RG, given her wildcard).

Obviously, don't know, wasn;t there, so no idea how the game actually panned out but I doubt Emily would ever get three sets normally so I think the grass may well have made a difference.

Zhang rolled her ankle at 4-1 in the third and could barely move afterwards according to someone who was there.

Katy and Em apparently played very well. Tara dug in after getting torn apart in the first set.

Thanks for that, PaulM.

Sounds like Naomi got a bit lucky but that's the nature of tennis. Hope Zhang's OK.

Glad to hear good reports re Katy and Em, and that Tara showed fight.

Looks like Katy didn't like some of the comments about her serve and height......

Apparently I'm 5ft7 n have a 14yro 's serve but both are wrong...I'm 5ft5.5 n have a 15 and 4 month yro's serve. What do u think @kontaveit

I was trying to be generous when I guessed she was 5 ft 6 or 7 !

Point made, Katy - a LOT smaller than Naomi

(don't think anyone said anything about a 14 year-old's serve though...not that I saw....Jaggy just said it was weakish compared to the rest of her game).

I think the serve comment was made by somebody on Twitter and not me. I did see the Twitter comment she does have a good sense of humour. She should get an ace for that at least

It was a good return certainly if aimed at me ha.

Heck, most women players of whatever "stature" would struggle to achieve "Naomi on a good day's serve". When it's on, it's ON ! ( real pity that it's not more consistent ). Let alone one of the many much shorter than Naomi.

Just imagine if Andy could serve like John Isner and still retain all his other gifts such as his movement and anticipation that Big John more struggles with ...

On the non-Brits, nice to see Danilidou, age 32, doing well and beating the second seed . . . and great result for Kontaveit against Mestach.

Whatever. Pathetic responses really. Quite funny I suppose

Dodin is very much like a Kvitova type player, when she is playing well she can rack up great results and make her opponent look very average - she is definitely top 100 at her best and I would be surprised if she wasnt top 50 when she gets more consistent. At least Naomi on grass should be looking to hold serve and keep the sets tight.

Interested to see how Tara gets on against Pliskova - both girls like the grass and Tara should be hitting freely
