General election/politics

I am not sure why it needs to take 4 months for this process to play out to get a new leader? Surely it can be done a lot quicker than that - unless Boris re appoints all of the people who left their roles the past few days, we dont have a functioning Government politically. They may say it is all about implementation but Boris is a lame duck PM now and 4 months of that is too long. They need to set out a quicker timetable, surely a month, at most two is long enough (general elections get done in 4-5 weeks typically!) - they should have someone appointed by beginning of September, back from recess and give them time to formulate some policy if they need to present that to the Tory conference in October.

If Boris wants a substantive role over the next 6-8 weeks, he can focus on Ukraine and working with Zahawi on the cost of living crisis. And then just go to GB News or wherever ex Tory PM's go these days

To be honest, I think it would be quicker if the summer recess wasn't in the way.  But they have to organise the final vote among Tory members. It's not just the MPs that make the decision.

What does surprise me is that they are thinking of leaving him in office for the interim period after ousting him because he is not fit for office.  He should step down with immediate effect and Raab, as Deputy PM, should serve during the interim period.

While Johnson evidently wants to stay PM for the interim, there are are plenty who are certainly not thinking that way and the word I hear quite often is 'unsustainable'.

So this looks like it may be the next running dispute.

And indeed Raab, as deputy, if not running for the top job himself, is the interim generally being mentioned.

Zahawi seeks quite a guy. Evidently only gave his ongoing support if he was made chancellor and then the next day was one of the cabinet urging Johnson to resign.

And Michelle Donelan, who replaced him as Education Secretary on Tuesday night resigned this morning.

Zahawi started yesterday saying how honest Johnson is so he seems like a break from the current lying :)

Of course Boris wants to stay as interim

While there's still breath in the body, there's still a chance

And who would bet against him trying to inveigle himself back in somehow, after the summer recess, when - he's hoping - it's died down a little and the fight amongst the others is nasty

Please, dear Lord, let them force him out now

Rumour going around that Johnson is currently preparing 2 letters ...

1) I am going to stay
2) I am going to leave

... before deciding which one to read out.

Duh, brought out the wrong letter.

To the end the man cannot see that the right thing, the unselfish thing, the dignified thing is to hand over to an interim immediately.

So it goes on, with Labour planning to propose a vote of no confidence in Johnson as PM if, as is not unlikely, the Tories can't persuade him to just GO!

As the former Scottish Conservative leader, Ruth Davidson, has said, "It is arrant nonsense to think he can ( stay until October ). Someone needs to get a grip."

The only thing with Raab as an interim is that it wouldnt be appropriate, I believe , for someone running for the job full time to be holding the interim role. That said, there will be someone suitable and, failing that, I would be ok with Boris holding the fort for a month or two, but holding the election for a new leader by end of summer latest, no more.

I realise they need to get members to vote and they may argue summer hols will get in the way. But there are ways and means, with tech, and most of them are old folks who dont have jobs and really have no right to be on holiday in the summer school break anyway (just kidding!!)

The word going around at the moment is that Raab will NOT be running for leader. But this type of info is changing hourly, so who knows.

I don't know how these things work but it seems to me that Theresa May would make a good caretaker PM, steadying the ship until they can complete the leadership contest. Assuming she's prepared to start cleaning up Boris's mess. What is essential is that the Tory party gets Boris out of Downing St asap before he causes any more chaos.

Yes, agree, Theresa would be a reasonable choice

Boris obviously will have to be pried out with a pneumatic tool

Not only does he hope that by still living to see another day, things might just possibly turn his way

BUT he's also got his expense account and living quarters to think of - he has a house in Oxfordshire somewhere but that's rented out so where's he going to go? People with open cheque books, hoping for favours, might be slightly less thick on the ground now ...

Supposedly he's organised a big first wedding anniversary ay Chequers which is only available to the PM

And Lord knows how many other garden parties and whatever, all expensed probably

The arrogance of the man is staggering.
Not once in his speech did he mention the scandals that have gone off on his watch.
Instead, typically he blamed others calling them the herd mentality forcing him out.
The man should be made to go NOW.
What an utter disgrace he is for the country.

All he needs to do is go, line up a speech in the USA or somewhere, Dubai , for 250k , payment up front , and hes sorted for a while. Can live in the Savoy for a while
