Hi, ShrewD. Good to hear that you were there, supporting !
And, as paulisi says, there's a huge difference (in general) in the physiques of teenage boys and men in their mid-twenties. It makes it very hard for youngsters to compete. According to stats, he won't have finished growing (in height) yet and, even if he has, bulking out as he gets older will make a big difference.
Will you manage to go back and see some later in the week?
Thanks for the first-hand updates and analysis, RJA. As said to everyone who posts them, they're really appreciated.
NB Having seen him at Sutton, I also thought Jonny seemed talented but 'immature' - not a huge insult, he's young after all. But ... Very interested to hear about Marcus Walters. Did you manage to see anything of Luke Oakley?
And love the story about Peliwo - as Shhh says, makes you feel good about mankind. :) Good on him.
I think immature is a fair criticism of Jonny and in fairness he probably wouldn't dispute that assessment. He wears his heart on his sleeve, has a quirky sense of humour and is very critical of himself. He does have a tendency to lose focus and then get frustrated with himself for having lost focus. Normally he regains his focus fairly quickly but it only takes a few mad minutes to throw away set or indeed a match. Again I think he knows this is the case, which seems to be part of the reason for his frustration with himself. It seems to be a case with him thinking "I can't believe I have done this again". He also has a tendency to complain about any and every decision to the umpire, not an endearing trait but it is mitigated because unlike a huge number of players at this level I have never seen him cross the line into being abusive towards the umpire. All in all I like his personality, he has a few rough edges which hopefully will be smoothed with time but his flaws always seem to me to stem form the right motivation.
I only saw one game of Luke Oakley, not enough to make any judgement.
