RE: Will Andy sack Mauresmo?

I disagree, BeefyDeedz. Without focussing on any individuals, let's just say that there are many talented sports people who are not the sharpest tools in the box, and that can be unhelpful.

I would suggest that Andy Murray is more educated in the matter of his coaching than anybody on this board, and most players on the tour. A1 clearly linked Andy Murray to his comment about education, which boggles my mind. I understand your point, and as you've already mentioned you were generalising, but his post certainly commented on individuals - or a particular individual, I should say.

I guess how wise a choice it has been by Andy will largely play out in time. I do hope that it is a decision he doesn't come to regret.

I have previously given my own indications of concern, which are mainly thinking of future success. With Andy there is an apparent element of wanting for himself to play a particular way and how much he is prepared in his mind to sacrifice success to go in that direction, only he knows.

I've got quite a lot of time for Courteau but if you bring in Amelie's coach, it sort of begs the question as to what exactly Amelie is doing . . .

It wasn't Amelie who Andy had in mind when it came to recent sackings:-

Tough job looking after a seventeen man team. I think I'd need to consult a shrink for that lot alone.

It provides quite an interesting insight into one player's approach. Here's another article in similar vein:-

A team that size seems excessive to me. It might stem from uncertainty or lack of confidence but it seems he's going the right way about it now in cutting the numbers back.

I might be complete wrong here (I don't really 'follow' Andy that much) but I seem to remember, a long while ago, that Andy said he needed a big entourage because, effectively, he liked to have a lot of friends around.

I think this was post Brad Gilbert and his rather harsh, laugh-less regime. And obviously with no other real Brits on tour either (or only Tim who was a fair bit older) - not that that always matters - there's always others you've played junior tennis with/ gone to the academy with.

But I got the impression that Andy liked 'mates'. Now, I'd imagine, he's less 'needy' in that way - more confident, more mature, more well-known on tour, got his tennis pro mates already, probably more sorted overall.

I doubt it's quite the same now.

Anyway, yes, agree that 17 (!) certainly seems excessive.

I certainly agree that you need folk all pulling in the same direction ( while being allowed input ).

Not sure that Andy was exactky tactful in how Amelie was brought on board, but going forward positive togetherness is important.

Given the absolute key roles that Dani and Jez played, their particular moves on seem to have much more to it than cutting numbers, although 17 does seem a lot !

There was a big three-page interview with Andy in the Sports section of last night's Evening Standard (can't see it online), saying that the two weeks he spent with Amelie in Miami were really helpful, he's been working extremely hard on the physical side, and is feeling good.

He's very frank and candid, saying the low point, really, was his Wimbledon match against Dimitrov, which was just a 'bad match'. He then wanted to play a lot of matches, actually win a tournament, remember how it felt to win; there's a LOT of stuff about confidence, and lack off.

He says it's too early to say what Amelie's impact has been/will be - he expects it to start coming through from 2015 onwards.

He also talks interestingly about the criticisms that have been levelled at him, about lack of aggression and playing too defensively , saying that every single coach he's ever worked with has wanted him to play more aggressively, but there are lots of different ways to do that (taking the ball earlier? hitting the ball harder? standing in on the return? going for return winners? going for winners from the back of the court? serve and volley ? etc. etc.). How do you define it, he asks? And all of which, he says, depend very heavily on confidence, which is very much linked to movement. Andy says that for much of last year he wasn't moving that well, so he didn;t feel all that confident about his game, so he couldn't help but be more cautious in his play - it was nothing to do with tactics, or with how he was working in training practices, it was just a logical result of how he felt on court.

That sounds very like this interview - www.sport-magazine.co.uk/. If when you first click you don't get a picture of Andy, scroll sideways until you do.

I define playing more aggresively as how Andy finally did successfully under Lendl !

Ahem!  If you look at the post with which I launched the AO thread in this forum, CD, you will see that I was the one who first posted the link to the interview with Andy on the Sport Magazine site. wink

Wasn't stealing your glory, Stircrazy smile

What I meant, and still mean, was 'well done' to Madeline for her Sherlock Holme's skills in recognising that the Evening Standard interview was a copy of the Sport Magazine one.

I wondered where I had seen the story first. . . apologies, SC, but I haven't time to go trawling through all the threads to find where I have seen something! I posted it on another forum and that's where I got the link for the re-post.
