Whilst King obviously deserved to be defaulted, has to be said it was an oscar winning performance from the overweight linejudge.
agreed - if she was slightly more athletic it would be fair to say she would not have gone down clutching her knee. That said I was just pleased that the match was over - I don't think I could have managed watching a third set of what was an extremely poor quality match.
Still let's forget about this match, the important thing Ed through to round two where he will hopefully find a much higher level

Darian threw his raquet into the tarpaulin (quite strongly) and it bounced back and hit (lightly) the linejudge on the back of her shoulder. She started (sort of in surprise) and fell over, twisting her knee ?
If the Dubious Goals Committee looked at it, there wouldn't be much to see !
But, yes, he shouldn't have done it. Default was perfectly fair. And it certainly did humanity a service by bringing the match to an end . . .

Basically Ed won a tight point to go 5-2* in the tie break, Darian turned around and through his racket at the tarp out of frustration, the racket bounced off the tarp and into the back of a large line judge who went down to the floor clutching her knee where she remained for some time receiving medical treatment.
Everybody went over to the cameraman to watch the replay (first time video replay has been used in tennis?) and as it was probably worth a 1 point racket abuse penalty the umpire decided to just call it a day and default the victory to Ed (he was probably nervous that it might go to a third set too!!!)

It looked like she went over on her knee. I'm normal weight, am 'athletic' and yet have pretty bad knees. You can't really say that.
Thanks to CD and Freerider for the explanation. One of the joys of ATP Livestream however is that having missed the action, I was able to go back and watch the replay, which I did whilst you were typing. But thanks anyway.
Well that was weird. Funny to see a group huddled round the camera, didn't think replays could be used in decision making.
He obviously didn't think he'd hit her but still pretty disappointing King didn't seem to care if she was ok when she remained on the ground.
Definitely not Ed's best today. Hope he can rediscover his groove in the next round.
Yeah I think it was Kings attitude that swayed the decision to default him - he just walked around with an air of arrogance rather than helping the woman up or showing interest in how she was which was fairly disgraceful.
I think the earlier comments are out of order, her weight was not a contributing factor. King was a total idiot for throwing his racquet right by her and she was understandably shocked by the incident. She has no reason to exaggerate and was a fairly elderly woman; I think showing some compassion is fairer than insulting her weight.
I didnt know where to post this,
I have been reading this forum for several months now but am yet to contribute.
I have started to write a few articles on british tennis for the website givemesport
Agreed. The racket clearly caught her not only on the shoulder but also in the back, which - particularly if unexpected - might well cause anyone to lose their balance. And frankly, nothing should distract from really pretty disgraceful behaviour by King: you don't throw a racket at a surface when there is someone standing nearby. It's not rocket science that it might rebound. And when you've done it and hit someone, quite frankly, I don't think you try to argue that there shouldn't be a penalty. Consequences are consequences.
On a cheerier note, I came in late and didn't watch the earlier part of the match (sounded as if it wasn't worth watching), but I did watch the last few points and was struck by the fact that Mr Corrie seems very decent to the ballboys and ballgirls, walking towards them rather than beckoning them to come to him. Don't know if that's generally true, but it goes with the impression one gets of his general character. If someone's going to win after having played a dubious match, it might as well be he.
L32: Ed Corrie WR 217 beat Darian King (BAR) WR 310 (CH 302 earlier this month) by 6-4 6-6(5-2*) default
L32: Liam Broady WR 235 v (2) Tim Smyczek (USA) WR 97 (CH 73 last Nov) - H2H 0-1 - Smyczek won 1 & 1 in Napa last month
L16: Ed Corrie WR 217 v (6) James Duckworth (AUS) WR 150 (CH 132 last Nov)
