I was just looking at the junior rankings on the ITF website and was struck by something that I'd never noticed - though others have doubtless mentioned it (my fault for dipping in and out, especially on this thread). Jack Draper is indeed a 2001 ... but he was born 22 December 2001, so he really might just as well be a 2002. It makes his accomplishments to date even more impressive. Interestingly, the same is also true of Harry Wendelken (about whom I know nothing) who is the #3 ranked 2001 and was born 18 December. Quite unusual. Ema Lazic is another - 28 December.
Haven't seem Harry W play but have seen Jack D. He cuts a very slight figure on the court but looks a very 'natural' player, more so than his older brother. Hard to explain what I mean by natural but some kids (and adults) play well but look very drilled and practiced and show no noticeable flair, imagination, easy power or easy movement on the court (Alexis Canter falls into this category in my mind, hard working, making the most of what he's got but his tennis looks like it's been imposed on him from the outside rather than being an expression of what's coming naturally from inside). Jack is just the opposite to Alexis, just looks like it all comes to him very naturally (bit like it has always seemed to for Evo, but hopefully Jack won't wait so long to knuckle down!)
I've posted before with an almost identical view of Alexis - not wanting to knock him, and it can take you quite far, but his tennis is very 'taught', in my opinion.
Ben Draper, as you say, is not the most natural player either but does have a very good physique for tennis.
It's good to see the end-Dec players that Spec highlights doing well. Much research has been done on the subject and the 'actual' age tournaments and half-year cut-off age tournaments have been introduced to try and combat potential problems related to it.
It's an interesting area that's only been touched on as to what the difference is for end-Dec players in Britain (with its Sept-Sept school intake), as opposed to most European countries that use the calendar year for school intake.
i.e. a Dec GB child will be one of the older ones in the class but in a lower year. A French Dec child will be one of the very youngest in the class but in a higher year. There are arguments either way for maturity, autonomy, confidence, success etc. etc.
With his Egyptian points beginning to come off, Jay drops down to number 2, behind Ryan. Nice moves from our 99-ers, Max and Barnaby - Barnaby Smith was JWR 600 approx only a month ago !!! And is now in the top 200

Congratulations to Ryan on obtaining the number 1 spot, I am sure Jay won't mind handing over the mantle as it looks like he's only playing Men's.
Yes, absolutely.
Junior rankings are pretty much completely irrelevant for the 1998-ers now (IMO) but in the big picture it's nice to share it about so both boys can say they've been British Number One.

Yes nice to be #1. Albeit at this point inherited by Jay dropping points from last year, Ryan has now been #1 ranked GB junior.
But yes, particularly for the 1998-ers, it's so much more about transition to seniors, with yes their junior ranking pretty irrelevant. And please among the boys can we reasonably soon have a teenager inside the senior top 1000. Inside the top 1200 with more than 6 points would be a step towards that.
