The more matches Andy gets before RG, however scrappy, the luckier he will get at the Grand Slam itself. More data for the Lendl team to look at, more strategies that work or don't work to tinker with, more time on the devil dust to get comfortable, and more confidence from winning matches. My observation is that he has retrenched into his passive mode once again, but this may be a natural byproduct of his initial lack of comfort on clay, which will improve with every day.
He will get better, of course, whether it will be enough to be a contender at RG I doubt very much. Nadal looks a different class, Stan is a revelation, and Novak still has several gears to shift up. Very poor from Fed. However brilliant he is, 2 months off against top players is a lot.......except for Rafa.
Pretty much agree with RJA. Most things point to Ferrer being the clearly stronger clay court player, but come the big occasions he so often doesn't really produce. So I think Andy would have a far from insignificant chance.
Just please not be playing decently and then get Rafa in the QF !
Ferrer threw it away. At 6-5* in the second he got to 15-30 and had a simple put away that would have given him two match points but with an entire court to aim at he hit the ball straight to Rafa's backhand.
Nishikori's just been more or less brushed aside by 3 & 5 by the Spanish WC, Pablo Andújar! What else does that say about Rog? Was he wise to take a couple of months off before Madrid?
It is now 9.20pm here. Muzza and Berdych are 2-2 in the first set. Stan and JW Tsonga are on afterwards. If there are two long matches they are still going to be playing at 3am !!

I'd say it says Fed is pretty rusty, similar to Andy at Indian Wells when he hadn't played since the Aussie Open. Who knows what work he has been doing. Seems to be about helping him be stronger later on in the year and generally to help prolong his career, which seems fair enough.
