Week 19 - ATP Masters 1000 - Internazionali BNL d'Italia - Rome, Italy (clay) (non-Andy + doubles)

I know he is not a big name in general terms but they have an entry list with only 3 players in the top 200 so by that standard he is a big name. Signing in for qualies would be an idea too though, clay is his best surface and the season is nearing it's end without any significant points or wins. With this essentially being a futures level field he should back himself to come through qualifying and win the title. I have no expectations for Aljaz on grass at all so he needs to do something in the next few weeks before his ranking sinks to where he is having to play qualies just to get into 250 events again.

Is it just me, or does it seem that Aljaz's downturn in form seems to have coincided with the ITF decision to refuse him the right to play DC for Team GB. It is almost as though that decision has knocked the stuffing out of him and he can hardly buy a win at the moment.

You may well be onto something Bob.  He has been far from his best since the decision was made.  I was inclined to think it might be something to do with the wrist problems he was having around the time of the Irving Challenger but he did seem genuinely distraught by the decision and it might be affecting his motivation at the moment.

I would certainly expect him to at least reach the SF were he to end up playing there but it is actually 3 top 100 players and then a futures draw. Lorenzi would probably still be favourite and both Lajovic and Zeballos are more than capable of matching Aljaz.

The young men beat the Spanish Lopezs in a MTB which is pretty impressive,

OOP has Dom Inglot and Fabrice Martin as alternates, playing Marach and Matkowski, who should have been playing the top seeded French pair. Drawsheet not updated yet when I looked.

Yay, good spot, I see it on the draw on the ATP site now.

Someone did say that Herbert had some injury in his and Mahut's defeat in Madrid. Interesting match-up now with Martin & Marach being pretty regular partners who have been doing quite well this year. They no doubt looked for alternative partners to get into Rome and it's just worked out for Martin ( and Dom   )

R2: (ALT) Dominic Inglot & Fabrice Martin (FRA) CR 71 (30+41) vs Oliver Marach & Marcin Matkowski (AUT/POL) CR 66 (47+19)

Marach & Matkowski beat Fognini and Seppi in a MTB in R1, Dom & Fabrice inherited Herbert & Mahut's bye.

Herbert & Mahut's withdrawal I think should also have the interesting effect for now of promoting Nicolas Mahut to 'in running' WR 1 since once again being able to use what was his 18th counter rather than the Rome Masters has Mahut in running on 7670 points, now ahead of Melo on 7590, Probably won't stay there, but for now ...

( in men's doubles the normal singles mandatories are compulsory counters but only once you have played in them )

A sensible move for the French - Herbert had concerns around the final in Madrid. And their real target, as they've articulated several times, is Roland Garros. And interesting for Mr Inglot. Could be positive: Fabrice Martin is having a very good year, and there's at least a decent shot at points (though also the risk involved in the mandatory).

The match is being played tomorrow (Wed) although both Thiem and Zverev play singles earlier in the day, the latter against Federer, so I doubt this will be their top priority.

Eventually, I think they had at least 4 mp.

Bryans up next.

Imagine getting the #1 ranking in that way.
