Aberdeen Cup - Interview with Jamie Murray

"How were the girls in ukraine" ?

JM : laughing....no it was a great place...never played there before....didnt play that well but really enjoyed it.

"You must be happy with your ranking...was it a surprise to break the top 100"

JM ; Yeah it was a bit....started the year thinking about singles but that didnt work out and with playing with Andy helped boost my double ranking.

"Are you finshed with singles now ?"

JM : pretty much....if  i play singles qualies then it could impact on my doubles and i can play doubles at the highest level, slams, ATP events etc...I can make a good living playing doubles and will play 3-4 times a year with Andy.

"Do u see you playing much with James Aucklan?"

JM : Its hard because we both play in the AD court and it would take a concerted effort to change

"mens doubles is looking good in the UK with so many good players"

JM ; Yeah its good with the likes of May / Bamford and it seems more guys are keen to play

"Any goals for next year"

JM ; not really looking forward to Doha with Andy and hopefully the AO with James.

"Your match was close with James...you played well"

JM : Yeh i did but it was my first singles match for months so cant be to disappointed.

"Thanks for your time Jamie"

JM : No problem !

Might make more sense to try it somewhere with fewer ranking points and dollars at stake....

....that said, I wonder whether an AD- court doubles player adapts better to playing Deuce Court than a singles specialist would....

yeah i always have trouble with ad and duce, i think its to do with which way you are serving on ad points and duce points as its always the same way. asuming you know which side u r ment to start on.

The deuce court is the side you serve to at deuce [left one for the server] and the ad court is the side you serve to at advantage [right one for the server].

Lol @ the girls question...must have taken some guts to ask that one !! One that subject, maybe that's why Slabba isn't playing in the Czech Republic this week. The girls in these eastern europe tournament locations are said to be some of the hottest on the tour, so maybe Slabba wanted to maximise his off-court time this week !

I guess Brad must have put his foot down regarding Andy playing doubles in the AO as I thought he and Jamie might have teamed up. I think it's a good decision though, it's at the height of the Australian summer and temperatures can get up to the mid 40s on court so he doesn't want to be playing extra matches which could scupper his chances in the singles due to running out of gas later on.

With Jamie playing in Doha, I wonder where Aucks will go for the first week of the season - maybe Chennai with Delgy. It's a bit harsh on Jamie as he would have had an outside chance of making the doubles cut with Aucks but now he'll have to settle for the Wrexham challenger.

Too many Jamies! It took me three readings to work out what you were saying!

(for anyone else struggling like I did, Jamie Murray is playing Doha (with Andy). Jamie Delgado is chucked by Aucks for the AO in favour of Jamie Murray, so the Jamie it's harsh on is Delgy!)

One more thing Jamie said at the weekend....

"Kayer identified that i need to be more explosive....into the net after serving and at the net...will be working on that in the next few months..."

Just saw it in my notes...

I think Drew said he was his new coach or is helping Jamie out at the moment. Louis Kayer - coached Erlich and Ram at one point.

edited to add - found Drew's post. - * Jamie Murray has teamed up with Louis Kayer ex DC captain of Canada. Coached the likes of Erlich and Ram / Knowles & Nestor. Been getting coached by him for the last 2 mths...going to be with him over the next while.

I think its Louis Cayer???

He's the one who said Colin Fleming was better than Jamie Murray and they should split up!

Yes, it's Louis Cayer who's one of the world's top doubles coaches. He's written what's widely acknowledged to be one of the best ever books on doubles tactics.

Judy Murray got him to work with Jamie and Colin in May and they spent a month with him. He really improved several aspects of their games; so much so that they actually
gave the Bryans a good match in the Boodles challenge. Cayer reportedly thought that Colin had a lot more potential than Jamie - his returning and baseline play were stronger, he felt that Colin could be top 20 and said that he'd have to consider splitting up with Jamie to maximise his potential !! Cayer thought that Colin should have been picked for the DC team in July, wasn't happy about his omission. However, in the time they spent together in the summer, Jamie's game did take off aswell - his returning improved so much.

I didn't know that Cayer had been working on a full time basis with Jamie in the past couple of months. That explains how he's improved so much ! Jamie's strength has always been his volleying - his touch, placement, anticipation and movement at the net is superb. When I saw him in Bratislava, his returning and serving [in particular the serve placement and he's also added extra "juice"] had improved so much. Returning has probably improved even more than what I saw as Jamie said afterwards that he'd been "returning horrendously" that week !
