Kooyong exhibition

Andy has committed to ATP Adelaide and the Kooyong Classic for his opening two events of the year.

A shame for invisibleman18 who was hoping to see him in Auckland again Maybe Boggo will play there if he gets direct entry to AO.

Kooyong is a 4 day round robin tournament which begins on Jan 10th. Other players who will be competing are Federer, Ljubicic, Nalbandian, Roddick, Haas, Stepanek and Safin. Quite a line-up !!!!

RE: Andy to play Kooyong in January

i thought he said he going to be more flexible in his schedule next year he said that he's not going to play a tournament a week before grand slams and masters series. ok, i know kooyong a exhibition, but you still have to compete.

Adelaide may well be a Round Robin tournament too. They want to be the first ATP event to try the new format (which I think sucks by the way)

i agree. round robin games makes it unfair for players. e.g. say if murray won against federer, but murray lost the next 2 but federer wins his 2 matches. Fed would go through leaving murray p****d off for just winning one match and thats it. also, i dont know how the ranking points would effect the round robin format and also how they would get a 32 strong field of players to compete in that format in a week. Best just to leave to the masters.

Yeah disappointing he won't be coming back, but at least I got to see him and meet him this year. Hopefully we will get a few reasonable names. Hrbaty, Gonzalez, Ginepri and the Rochus bros are regulars anyway so they should all be back (all going well).
I have heard that Boggo may be coming so it would interesting to see him.

Well cos he's British and I don't think I've ever seen him play before. Would at least give me someone to support while I'm there, if nothing else.

how many days do you plan to go this year?

i remember your reports and pics from last year. They were excellent.

i wonder if the likes of Del Potro and Gulbuis will be going this year. They're both ones to watch....

I'll see what I can get tickets for and see what players we get to come. I'll definitely go at least once, probably the 1st day. If we don't get many big names then maybe I won't go again or if it looks a good field I might go a 2nd time.
I remember this year I turned up on the 1st day without a ticket and got what was apparently the last one despite there being many empty seats. Wanted to go 2 days later to see Ancic-Murray and went to a ticket office near home the day before but was told it was sold out, again there were many empty seats on tv. So I'll have to buy tickets in advance of the tournament this time to be safe. At least one day.

Interesting, the Telegraph says the same.

But Doha is at the same time as Adelaide, and he is supposed to have committed to that. As usual, his official site is no help at all. . .

We will just have to wait for further news I suppose.

Am i right in saying Doha usually has a weaker field than Adelaide? For a start Ljubicic won there and hes nothign special. If so its good if it's true as i feel the ranking points will be crucial at the start of the year where he an really push on because except from San Jose and Memphis he has pretty much nothing to defend. It will also give him confiendece going into the the AO if he has some wins under his belt.

These were the 2006 seeds:

1. Roger Federer
2. Nikolay Davydenko
3. Richard Gasquet
4. Sebastien Grosjean
5. Igor Andreev
6. Olivier Rochus
7. Gael Monfils
8. Feliciano Lopez

- so not exactly a weak field

Adelaide, by comparison had:

1. Lleyton Hewitt
2. Dominik Hrbaty
3. Tommy Robredo
4. Mario Ancic
5. James Blake
6. Tomas Berdych
7. Jarkko Nieminen
8. Juan Ignacio Chela,

while Chennai saw:

1. Ivan Ljubicic
2. Radek Stepanek
3. Carlos Moya
4. Paradorn Srichaphan
5. Gilles Muller
6. Rainer Schuettler
7. Bjorn Phau
8. Tomas Behrend

So as official advisors to Andy on where to go to get cheap points....maybe India.....

However, to set himself up best for the AO, surely he wants to be 3 hours flight and 1 hours time difference away (i.e Adelaide) rather than a long haul flight away? Also, I'll bet he's a lot more comfortable in an Aussie house or hotel than in the more culturally exotic India or Qatar....

He'll be pretty comfortable in India. But I want him to play on Rebound Ace.

I Know we all know this but its an update.

Andy joins Kooyong line up

13 November, 2006

Andy will be preparing for the 2007 Australian Open alongside some of the world’s best players when he appears in the eight man AAMI Classic field in Kooyong. Joining Andy there are Roger Federer, David Nalbandian, Tommy Haas, Ivan Ljubicic, defending champion Andy Roddick, Radek Stepanek and Marat Safin - what a great line up that is!

The AAMI Classic is a great warm up for the Australian Open as the exhibiton event guarantees players more than one match to play. Also, the chance to test out your game against the world’s best the week before the first Grand Slam of the year is not to be sniffed at!

The tournament Director, Colin Stubbs, is natuarally very excited about the ‘07 line up which is set to wow the Australian fans. He said: “I’m delighted with the quality of the field. The 06 event was very successful, due largely to the support of our new sponsor, AAMI. We continue to refine and grow our product. I am confident that the 07 AAMI Classic will deliver a superb experience to our corporate supporters, public attendees and television viewers.”

It’s being played 10-13 January. If you can get there, make sure you do, sounds like a super event!
