I have heard it on the radio twice now that Darren clark is thinking of withdrawing his name from the top award. This is just a rumour. Apparently he does not want to win it on the back of his wifes death. Which is a very noble stance to take.
If he does withdraw then that will be a pity. I would have voted for him.
Hasn't been the best year for British sport. Has to go to either Zara Phillips on achievments tbh. There's very few other deserving nominees IMO. Andy Murray I guess deserves a nomination, and Darren Clarke would certainly get my vote. Monty Panesar granted had 1 good test series, but the fact that that is good enough to be in the running for this award shows what an overall poor year it was in terms of British sporting achievment. Steven Gerrard did single handedly win an FA Cup final to be fair but you just can't give an award to someone who missed a penalty in a world cup quarter final. Just can't do it surely.
Darren Clarke for my vote but Zara Phillips is equally deserving.
Is it just me, or is this the worst year for British sport ever!!
There are no serious candidates whatsoever, absolutely desperate.
I hope Andy doesnt get it, he's destined for bigger things than winning it this year. This year has just been a platform but he's still not reached a slam Quarter Final yet, so it would be embarrasing to win it. You'd have to go for Calzaghe in my book, but I aint voting for any of them ,could be the first time Ive ever not watched it.

I agree...Andy will win it 2008 when he wins the USO
i agree...its hasnt been an exciting year for our major sports. football..no World Cup. Cricket: England are running scared in the outback! Rugby: Englans struggling like hotcakes! Tennis: only Boggo and Murray has made some impression but dont think he'll win.
But its only the Ryder Cup that the many brits participants have won, so they probably win the major awards at the bash as well either Colin or Darren winning personality.

This is nowhere near the worst year ever for British sport, I don't know exactly how many World, European and Commonwealth champions we have but there are lots. Just because the popular sports do badly don't knock the sportsmen and women who endeavour against all odds in there less funded and therefore less popular sports.
I don't care much for this award, especially in recent years with telephone voting. It's a shame that the Commonwealth games were in March or the result would be totally different.
I think Beth Tweddle deserves at least to reach the shortlist as she just won a world gold in gymnastics, but it's not a particularly popular sport so she probably won't

Boggo's had a good year but he's not a credible sports personality of the year award winner.
As for giving it to someone who plays a minor sport, no way, it's much easier to be a world champion ten pin bowler or bridge player cos hardly anyone plays it.
I say lets have the good grace t call the damn thing off for this year to save us any more embarrassment.
A shortlist of 10 contenders has been named for the 2006 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.
Equestrian star Zara Phillips, golfer Darren Clarke, tennis player Andy Murray, plus boxers Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton are among the candidates.
Cyclist Nicole Cooke, cricketer Monty Panesar, gymnast Beth Tweddle, darts champion Phil Taylor and Formula One's Jenson Button complete the list.
The winner will be decided by a public vote during the show on Sunday night.
Viewers can vote by phone or text throughout the programme, which is being broadcast from the NEC in Birmingham for the first time, and is live on BBC One from 1900 GMT.
Seven men and three women are in the line-up, which boasts representatives from all four nations of the United Kingdom.
Clarke is the current favourite with bookmakers after his emotional victory with the European Ryder Cup team just weeks after the death of his wife Heather.
But the Northern Irishman has said he does not want to win the award on a sympathy vote, and the contest is expected to be one of the closest for years.
At various stages of the last four months, Murray, Phillips and Panesar were rated favourites for the prize, which was won last year by England Ashes hero Andrew Flintoff.
The shortlist was drawn up from a combination of online and postal public votes, newspaper and magazine editors and a BBC Sport panel of experts.
Phil Taylor who plays Darts in the Sports personality of the year award?!? C'mon Darts isn't a sport

So what do we do for this? Just send a text during those hours?
I'll spend some money and text then. It'll cost me a bit but can't let some minority sports performer win.
The BBC is terrible. In case we are considering Zara, why isn't Peter Norfolk there? He is like.... the best ever in his sport, which can't be said about many others of the minority sports persons in the list.
