RE: USO R3 Gonzalez v Murray

Murray is after the Hewitt-Djokovic match. It will start fairly soon. Hewitt leads 5-3, 6-1, 5-2 - serving for the match.

I will miss the opening set, as my mum wants to watch equator and I can only access 5live sports extra via my TV as my loudspeakers on my computer don't work. Hopefully it will be on 5live too.

Some background info for this match:

Gonzo and Andy have played once before, in the quarters Basel last October. It was on indoor carpet which favoured Gonzo's big-hitting game and he won 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. The Chilean was particularly ruthless in dealing with Andy's 2nd serve that day and his extra power told in the final set, ripping winners at will off both sides. The medium paced outdoor hard courts in New York should even the contest up a bit.

Gonzo is the world no 11, he reached no 8 in May this year. He's been in the best form of his life this year. A successful clay-court season saw him reach the Monte Carlo semis and the Rome quarters. On the US hard courts this summer, he's got better and better, making the quarters of Indianapolis, the semis of Los Angeles, the semis of Toronto and the semis of Cincinatti. His success this year has been attributed to his new coach Larry Stefanki who he's working with for 15 weeks of the year. He now feels that hard courts are his best surface rather than clay which he grew up on.

He's made smooth progress to rd3 here, beating two Czechs with the minimum of fuss in straights. Last year he lost to Nalbandian in rd3.

Gonzo can hit big winners of both wings, he's hit forehands close to 100mph [the only player to break that barrier is Nadal]. However, I feel that Andy's ability to mix it up, change the pace, and his athleticism and consistency will give him a victory today in 4 sets. His reading of the play and anticipation caused Gonzo problems in Basel last year. Also, now with Brad Gilbert and a win over Federer, Andy will surely feel he can beat anyone !

Andy serving to start the match.
0-15. Awful start. Double fault
15-15. Gonzo narrowly misses a forehand winner off a murray second serve.
30-15. Good serve to the body. Gonzo return goes wide
40-15. Andy works Gonzo wide and after a few shots the Chilean cannot get the ball back into play
40-30. Bad attemted drop shot and andy is easily passed at the net.
DEUCE. Gonzo drop shot and andy doesnt have enough time to get it back in play
Adv Gonzalez... missed the pt - maybe a return winner or a double fault. it was quick.
DEUCE. Andy gets very lucky as a net cord bounces right up gonzalez at the net.
Adv Gonzo. Andy's forehand goes long.
Game Double Fault.

0-1*

So far Andy's groundstrokes arent deep enough and Gonzalez is dominating.
