RE: ATP Newport - Murray v Mello

Andy shows the fighting spirirt again which is a clear posititve he has that you should never count him out. That should have been much easier though Murray.

I wonder if Madeline's street has a single cushion left in it?

A quite simply astonishing match. I'd love to see a match report from someone who was present and might be able to explain what happened.

On the face of it Andy needs to have a serious evaluation of what the hell was going on out there but yet again he seems to have shown great fighting qualities.

Andrew is through!  Wow!  I really wish I could've watched that match.

Even as a Murray supporter, I really do feel sorry for Mello, he had so many chances to win.

Murray will really need to do better, he's the top seed, and as such, should get through a few more rounds at least.

So lets sum this up...

Andy breezes through the first set - breadsticking mello who barely even got a lookin it seems.

Mello returns the favour and takes it to a decider.

Andy looks dead an buried as the brazillian takes a 5-2 and seemingly unasailable lead.

Then he chokes.

Andy breaks back. holds. breaks again. 5-5

Andy decides to surrender his serve and mello serves for the match.

Andy tries to take it to a TB and has 2 break points. Mello fights back to deuce. He then has 6 match points but fails to capitalise throwing in a DF along the way. Somehow Andy breaks.

So now the tiebreak. Andy races to 3-0 in the breaker. Mello takes the next 5 points and is yet again tantalisingly close to victory. Murray snatches the mini breaks back and stumbles to victory taking the next four points. He wins 6-1 1-6 7-6(5). Talk about weird.

did anyone else notice Andy was given a code violation at the beginning of the game when Mello was winning 3rd set 6-5, which took Mello to 15-0. he was obviously very frustrated out there.

That match wasn't as tense as the San Jose final though against Hewitt.

Very tense at the end though.. On the Mello serve, with a few break points and match points for Mello.. I was worrying in that service game.. But glad to see Andy came through it and won the tiebreaker in the end to get through to the next round.

After the match Andy said "I should've played more carefully in the beginning of the second set, but I won the first set so easily, in like 20 minutes but then lost the second set in 25 minutes... I had a bad game to get broken, then he started to play better. I started to play better but he came up with some drop volleys that I really wasn't expecting from a Brazilan."

did he just get too casual? if so, having a coach on the sidelines would surely help to stop those sort of lapses.

The cushions in my street are all in pristine, immaculate condition, thank you

(Because my internet provider decided to upgrade its servers or something today, was only supposed to take a few hours, but has been off all day! It just came back on a short while ago, so I couldn't follow the match at all!)

Sounds as if it is just as well, I have blood pressure problems to start with. . .

I don't think that a coach will help that much with mental lapses. That is something that Andy needs to address himself.

my guess is mello, having lost 6-1 in the 1st just thought sod it i've got nothing to lose and went for everything and totaly changed his style, which is the right thing to do. totaly caught andy out anyway.

how often do we see one of our brits losing but still playing the same game to the bitter end? much better to lose this way.
