Bhagdatis took his 4th match point to win 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-1
if murray plays the way he did against roddick, then bhagdatis will be no match for murray! he could play hewitt in QF BUT i think he can get to the semi finals and play nadal!!
Sorry you had a monologue Niall, I expect we were all glued to the TV!
Andy!! What can I say? MAGNIFICENT!
I really didn't expect so good a win (I hoped of course!). I know Roddick isn't the force he was, but he has improved since Andy M beat him in San Jose - made the semis of Queens two weeks ago - and grass is his best surface.
Come on, Andy - Baghdatis can be erratic. Take your chance to go into the quarters!
Watching the first set I didn't think Andy was playing well enough to win the match. However, he kept saving break points, often with impressive play, big serves and fierce forehands keeping him alive until the tiebreak when a single point against the serve was enough to take the set. Really Roddick should have won the opening set. He was much the better player; most of his service games were won to 15 while Murray was struggling to hold, making too many needless errors on routine groundstrokes.
Interestingly, Murray attacked the net a lot more than I expected. He won a number of points serve-volleying and the general standard of his volleying was much higher than usual. The official stats show him winning an impressive 18 of 27 points at the net. In contrast, Roddick despite some excellent stop volleys on the stretch, managed less than 50%, converting just 28 of 59 as Murray's passing shots were consistently of the highest quality.
I was impressed by Roddick's serving throughout the match. 69% of first serves in play, serving at that pace is quite some achievement. He produced huge serves on virtually all of Murray's breakpoint opportunities, and many of his 21 aces came at key moments in the match. That he won just 73% of the points on his first serves indicates the exceptional quality of Murray's returns throughout the match.
Overall, I thought both players played well. Roddick will be disappointed about some of his play when he had the chance to break, and there was a desperately poor service game straight after he had broken Murray for the first time, but otherwise his tennis was of a high standard. Andy's performance, especially in the later stages of the match, was extraordinary. He managed to sustain an incredibly high level of play for the last two sets, winning almost 50% of points on return in the final set, and continuing to create break point opportunities despite the frustration of seeing Roddick ace him again and again to deny him the break.
In fact the standard of play from the player break point down was extraordinary; huge serves, aggressive forehands as the initial groundstroke, incredible passing shots. After almost 20 break point opportunities it would be harsh to say that the returner had a chance in more than a couple of the points. Some of the first real chances were wasted by Andy Murray on set point at the end of the second set though he found a pass down the line a minute later for the first break of serve and a 2 sets to love lead.
For me the surprise was not so much that Andy hit some glorious shots, or that he played so well at the key moments such as the first set tiebreak, but that he beat Roddick in a match when the Roddick serve was really firing. In terms of his serve Roddick could hardly have hoped to play any better - it was simply awesome.
An amazing match that midway through the third set I still thought Roddick's superior fitness would carry him to victory. But one poor service game allowed Andy to break back and he ended a worthy winner, having played outstanding tennis in the third set.
It was a win that should delight us but not surprise us. Playing well Andy has the game to beat Roddick on almost any surface. His ability as a returner means that he has little to fear from a big serve alone and his all round game is far better.
I missed the match yesterday cos it was my birthday but i made sure i recorded it! Good thing too :D
Just watched it and both players weren't at their best but i still think they were playing at relatively high levels. Murray just looked at ease with Roddick serve after the first set and really should have broken a few more times than he did though to be honest Roddick did make it tough serving massive unreturnables or aces at crucial points. Still think there is quite a lot of room for improvement (overall and at this tournament as well). I'd say that his performance yesterday was at 70-75% of what he is capable of at the moment. One great thing was that i felt he took this match much more seriously than he did his previous one and didn't insist on constantly going for the drop shot - its a great shot in his repertoire when its going in but if he misses a one or two he gets bogged down and keeps on trying to "correct" it and makes even more misses giving away cheap points.
