Boys & Girls: 2026 French Open, clay (Week 22)

The finals are now all set. We knew before today's semis that the boys final would be Brazil v USA and it transpires to be top seed Luis Guto Miguel against Michael Antonius. Some will remember Miguel, the latest highly touted young Brazilian, from his quarter-final match against Oli Bonding at the US Open. Both he and his opponent are ranked around ATP800, with Antonius having won an M25 this year, becoming the youngest ever American to win an ITF title, just after his sixteenth birthday. Miguel will become the world junior number 1 whatever the outcome of the final.

The girls final pits second seed Xinran Sun of China against the Czech-based Russian Alisa Oktiabreva. Sun becomes the first Chinese girl to reach the final here, and follows on from winning the toughest J500 event, in Milan. Oktiabreva has been concentrating on women's ITF events, winning 5 so far and has a ranking close to WTA300. Her last junior defeat was against Hannah K at the Orange Bowl last year.

Two fairly one-sided matches:

Boys Final

(1) Luis Guto Miguel (BRA) d. (13) Michael Antonius (USA) 6-3 6-4

Girls Final

(12) Alisa Oktiabreva (***) d. (2) Xinran Sun (CHN) 6-2 6-1

Looking at the French results... I hadn't noticed how many top Brazilian juniors there are. Guto won the boys and has become junior #1, he also beat a fellow Brazilian in the semifinals. In the girls the #3 and #7 in the world are Brazilian. Impressive for a country that has quite a limited history with the sport.

 The next Italy?

I guess over the years they have had the odd star like Guga Kuerten and Maria Bueno, but for a country their size and compared to the likes of Argentina, they punch below their weight. Hope some of these younger ones come through - for now, Fonseca is the shining hope!!
