Boys & Girls: 2026 Tennis Europe Winter Cup (U12/U14/U16)

The Winter Cup season started today with under 12 qualifying.  As the finals for this age group are again in Sunderland the British teams will qualify regardless of the results in the qualifying event.

The boys team consists of Frank Atkins, Philip Neuez and Louis Taylor.  They swept aside Georgia for the loss of a handful of games in their first qualifier

The girls team consists of Sahara Baptiste, Isla Skeates and Victoria Ariana Florea and they had no difficulty beating Switzerland 3-0 in the first of their qualifiers.  Also in their qualifying group is the Faroe Islands, albeit with a depleted team of 2, making their international debut.  They played Cyprus, and managed to win a couple of games in the doubles.

The under 12 boys suffered a 3-0 defeat by Italy, so have to rely on the fact that we host the finals to qualify. By contrast the girls beat Austria 3-0 (Isla winning 0 & 0 , Sahara 0 & 2) and play Croatia tomorrow

The under 12 boys rebounded with a 3-0 win over Finland - a tight 3 setter for Louis followed by a 0 & 3 success for Philip. The under 12 girls maintained their record of not dropping a set, beating Croatia 3-0, with Isla and Sahara playing singles again. On to Sunderland in 2 weeks time for their finals, whilst the other age groups play their qualifiers later this week.

Most of the under 14 and under 16 qualifiers start tomorrow, with wins required in their first two matches to make the finals. The under 14 boys team of Oskar Laskowski, Frederick Fabricius and Liam Sharkey are top seeds in their group and play Latvia first. The under 14 girls team of Dasha Jones, Ginny Chen and April Sackflame are also top seeded in their group, and play Portugal first. The under 16 girls team of Sofia Tatu, Annabel Wong and Leah Bush are likely to be seeded 2, but their draw is not yet up. The under 16 boys play a day later (expected team is Niall Packerd-Barua, Scott Watson and Jim Janda).

The under 14 teams both strolled to 3-0 victories losing only a handful of games (Liam 6-0 6-0, Fred 6-2 6-2 v Latvia and April 6-3 6-4 + Dasha 6-0 6-1 v Portugal) Tomorrow the boys play Germany and girls take on Greece with a place in the finals at stake

The under 16 girls also had a comfortable 3-0 win over Georgia (Annabel 6-1 6-1 and Sofia 6-2 6-1) but they face a potentially tough match against Turkiye for qualification. Tennis Europe under 16 rankings undervalue points in ITF events, and the Turkish number one is in the ITF top 150.

The under 16 boys take on Lithuania tomorrow in their first match with team as expected

Both under 14 teams have made it through to their finals. The boys had to battle to their 2-0 win Fred winning 6-3 4-6 6-1 before Oskar claimed the second 6-7(8) 6-1 7-5. They play Cyprus for seeding rights.

The girls had a more comfortable passage with straight sets victories for Ginny and Dasha meaning they play France to decide which nation will be seeded in the final.

As expected it was a tight match between the under 16 girls and Turkiye. Their strong top seed won in straights as did Leah, leaving it all on the doubles: Annabel/Leah taking that 10-8 in the match tiebreak. They play a French team led by former Orange Bowl under 12 champion Daniel Baranes in the seeding match.

So just the under 16 boys left to complete a possible rare clean sweep of finalists. They edged past Lithuania 2-1 today (Scott losing and Niall winning in straights, before Jan/Scott took the decisive doubles match tiebreak 10-3). They need to beat a strong Polish side tomorrow to progress. Their number 1 has won 3 consecutive ITFs beating Jan and Niall in the process.
