Girls: J300 Bradenton, USA, clay (Week 49)

I see in the J500 Orange Bowl in Fort Lauderdale, the qualies draw is out: Ophelia is seeded Q12 and plays an American wildcard; Athina Schlepphorst is also in qualies and also plays an American wildcard.

The US has a couple of very talented youngsters - and players like Iva and Julieta are obviously way above J300 level now

But can't help thinking that the US federation will be pretty cross to not have a single US girl even make the QF stage, and only one boy into the SFs (not even any Americans into the doubles finals etiher)

The girls was won by unseeded 15 year old, Kristina Luitova; the boys was also won by a 15 year old. Wild card, Jordan Lee.

Interesting to see how they both go in the Orange Bowl.

Luitova is the Russian who lives in the US, and seemingly applying for citizenship but caught in admin limbo, with the net effect that she cannot leave the country (and this, for the last 4-5 years or so)

She is now a top junior player, with an impressive WTA ranking, but has NEVER played outside the US (and not been the beneficiary of countless federation wildcards, either, of course). She really has been doing it all the hard way.

I remember you telling us about her now a few months back. Will make a mental note!
