Week 29 – ITF W75 Vitoria, Spain - Hard

The bookies had Katie as a clear favourite for that match. My main concern now is that the options for tournaments during August are quite limited at this level. She is Q23 for Lexington. If she decides to wait to see if she can get a place as an onsite alt is it her original entry ranking or ranking at that time that will be used?
Failing that she may have to scavenge points at W35 level for a few weeks.
I don't really like to see players of Katie's calibre do that too many times but if there isn't anything else available to her then needs must.
I think a real push in September would see her into AQ qualies.

Katie will have a massive jump in the rankings next week - before this match she was showing as up 208 places

Yes - it's a 75, so big points if you go deep.

The level is a big step up from what Katie has been playing recently, but doesn't seem to phase her

It's the 35 points from Don Benito that make the big difference - plus 16 now from here, less 1 from Nottingham last year

It's so great to hear about this result. I wish I'd seen it. Hopefully, having beaten the top seed, she's got a few more points to come this week

Can't she use an SR if she wants to play bigger tournaments?

She's used her SR (609) to get this far into tournaments.

Another tennis rule that's not fit for purpose when for most of her recent career she's been in the 100s

I don't think the rule is not fit for purpose. The SR is for the ranking on the Monday after the last tournament played. Unfortunately Katie had already dropped down the rankings before she became eligible fot her SR. She probably ought to have taken a little more time off the first time so as to get a better SR. She was out from March 2024 until July 2024 and then only played two tour-level matches plus the wild card playoffs. She would have had a SR of around 300.

Wow thats a cracking win.

Hopefully she can keep going here.

I think she now needs to keep playing 35 events to keep winning and build that confidence and get that ranking up as quick as possible and mix it with some bigger events when it fits.

OER now showing a live ranking of 513 after today's match, with further big jumps for each win.

Yes, she was indeed ranked around WR 300 before she initially stopped after the Traralgon W35 end Feb to start March last year.

After she came back in July with two R1 losses in Nottingham and Roehampton she was WR 609 on 12/08.

Hindsite though, probably. The injury was likely not something that could be easily measured as improving or not, and would only emerge again at the resumption of full time competition. In the end, if it can be managed without it going chronic again, then all will be well. We as fans should set no goals for Swan, imho, rather we should just be happy that she is back competing and causing quite a stir when she is able.

No, not hindsight. Her fitness was discussed at the start of last years wildcard playoffs (britishtennis.activeboard.com/t70830992/week-25-lta-wimbledon-wild-card-play-offs-wimbledon-grass).

I posted at the time ....
"When I spoke to Katie at Surbiton she thought she was a few weeks away from playing again. I certainly got the impression that she wouldn't be competing two weeks later ! I hope she is ready and not just taking a chance as she should get to contest a tough final round against Beth or Millie. I would still make Millie the favourite from this section though."
(Millie did beat her in the final round)

When she attempted the comeback last summer though, the real attempt was to get into Wimbledon. It is such a big tournament for her and she is great on grass, so I think she pushed the boat out and took a calculated risk and then took a hit on the rankings and gor injured again. I think she kew that when she did it and it doesn't look now, with her season going as well as it is now, that she made as bad a decision as maybe it looked at the time.

Now though she is really flying and I don't think it matters too much that she lost those points. She is getting herself back to full fitness and match sharpness by beating the lesser players and has picked up lots of ranking points here and in the last tournament. The main thing I think is for her to have enough ranking points this season to make a real go of making the top 100 next season. Her ranking of 513 now, with hopefully more points from this tournament and the rest of the season should give her a real shout of making next season a big one. The win against Ponchet is the most impressive result of her comeback I think, and what a lot of wins she has in a row now.

I feel that what has happened may actually be doing her a favour as she is breezing through against a lot of lesser players and then winning the tighter scraps against better players too. Win win for me.

I do remember the discussion on that thread, and it was a valued snippet of info that you posted TA. I guess I was talking more generally, re. hindsight, players are desperate to get going again, and 'the everyday sort of injury' is part of the sport. Swan had lost more than just the time out last year, for a few years previously it had been a constant battle for her. Time was slipping by, and the player knows it all too keenly.
