6 wildcards does feel like an awful lot when you see the draw of 16 typed out. Although not that the next entrants on the reserve list (Emma and Holly) would have changed the overall shape of the draw.

I don't think it's a particularly strong year to be honest. With injuries and lack of form that top half is really pretty weak when on paper you think it should be quite good quality with the names involved. Hopefully Katy's body holds together enough to get through, although Sophie would make a super story. I suspect Naiktha takes it.

Interesting Swan is testing herself here, but it seems a mistake to me. If she makes it through she will lose the eligibility she's been building up for a SR having not played since February, which will be handy for the autumn. And I'm not sure she's ready for a proper tour return yet? Feels like winner of Beth vs Amelia take this half, the other girls here are nowhere near GS Qualies level (as much as I rate Hep she's not ready and I am glad Vic has popped up).

Does participation in this play-off comp (and potentially the qualies too) actually count against SR eligibility?

I thought it did unless a waiver was granted, but as usual making sense of the rules requires a PhD.

Given the LTA could pull the event at any point and declare players in to qualies etc (eg last year they forewent the semis - is forewent a word??!) then do they actual have any official status at all - they are just a domestic event like a British Tour event or more like the UKPL? So would it have an impact on SR or anything else that could be impacted, such as win/loss record or head to head, earnings (is there any prizemoney?)

When I read PaulM's original post I took it to mean actually making it through to the main qualifying event - which of course has ranking points and prize money. The rulebook is a bit vague over what constitutes a relevant tennis event though.

The rules state that playing in any tennis event that includes 1 or more players that compete in professional tennis tournaments, whether they receive renumeration or not, counts as a return to competition These events include single-day, multiple-day, week-long, and seasonal team-oriented competitions, as well as charity events

Also surprised Swan has turned up here! Horrible draw for Beth Grey who performed admirably in qualies (2 years?) ago. Naiktha always a threat on grass and very interested to see how SDL goes!

Perhaps there's some leeway depending on the type of injury? Otherwise how is a player able to test their progress to return to competition?

If Katie S is fit, then she should easily have the quality to come through. Don't forget that she came through the Wimbledon qualifiers a couple of years ago and if the op to remove the trapped nerve and back spasms has been successful, then maybe she could actually have a chance in qualifying. It's surely better to be playing than sitting there and waiting for an SR, especially as I think her ranking has sat around the 300 mark for some time because of her injuries, so it's not like she would be given entry into the elite tournaments anyway.

I agree.  If it was any other time of the year then there could be an argument for waiting out the 6 months but it's Wimbledon and with her injury record she wouldn't want to risk waiting another year for an opportunity to play there if she feels she is fit enough to compete now.
