the commentators (Sam Smith etc) got it completely wrong - they assumed the umpire had messed up, said it wasn't possible that Grand Slams could be playing lets....
it does annoy me when the commentators don't do their basic homework
Mika's opponent does look fairly good. Tricky draw to play someone top 500 pro in round 1 but is unseeded because of their junior ranking. Did the junior slam seedings ever take account of WTA ranking? I feel like they might have done yonks ago, but likely inventing it.

Maybe Mimis opponent is feeling the same as Mimi is unseeded but has a WTA ranking of low 3000s?

There has always been a comparison table used for seeding purposes. Effectively you usually need to be in the WTA top 300 to be seeded (it could be lower if several of the top ranked juniors are missing). Many of the top juniors have good junior rankings and WTA, so if you had a combined system like Tennis Europe employs for under 16 competitions then players like Mimi and Pohankova would be seeded.
