Boys & Girls: Tennis Europe U14 Category 1 Junior International, Bolton, indoor acrylic (week 3)

In 2024 there was a group of 3 British boys who moved into the Tennis Europe top 10 early in the year. In 2025 we have 3 British girls already in the top 10, led by Megan Knight at number 1.  Megan isn't taking part in the British Category 1 event which starts tomorrow (she is on the entry list for the Super Category Les Petits As in a week's time though), but the other two are.  Liv Zingg is seeded 2 and Sofia Tatu 4, whilst Milica Milojevic and Hermione Korpanec Davies are minor seeds. In the boys event Haqim Kama and Kamran Arif are minor seeds.

Draws can be found here whilst live scores should be available here

Main draw 14U category 1 starts at Bolton tomorrow. 1 GB and 3 GB boys have come through qualifying to join the main draw. Nearly all the expected Brits are in the main draw. Some good matches coming up

The girls draw is really really interesting

Firstly, the top seed Latvian girl is a 'big name' in this age group

And then Ginny, Yanziye, Grace, Sophia, Dasha, Leah, Isabella, April ..... as well as the seeds

And Khadija is playing too

Very interesting !!!

Leah Bush (Tegan's little sister) (born 2011) lost 3-6 2-6

All the girls here, if my maths is correct, are born in 2011 or younger

Ginny, Sophia and Dasha are 2012-born, I believe, there may be some others too

Isabella Rebel (2012) lost

But Grace Watson is one of my favourites - and (more importantly, based on far better knowledge) a favourite of Rose's too - and she won easily

Tom, Dominic, Myles and Joseph all lost in the boys, however

Yes, potential wise Grace is second to Megan in my opinion. Shes a very handy lefty with a natural understanding of the game. Moves really well and is very competitive. Does so much with the ball, can hit a variety of shots from nearly anywhere on court and doesnt miss much. Can get very teary on the court and her line calls arent always great. However I dont think its deliberate cheating as its on the close line balls and not necessarily on key points so I think she is just so passionate about winning that she sees the ball out on those occasions. Its definitely getting better and she is going to improve even more as a player as she matures. Off court she is a lovely girl so I think her competitive nature just takes over on court! She  has been completely homeschooled for a few years now and trains a lot but never looks overtrained. The LTA recently gave her and Leah wildcards into the British Tour so they are both highly rated. I like Leahs play a lot too but I dont think she has the versatility with the ball that Grace does. There are definitely some very strong 2011 born GB players. Some good 2012 players to watch too. The ones youve mentioned already plus Naina Kapoor.

Big advantage for the older kids especially on the boys side at this age level.
Grace Watson, Livv Zhinng both tall and quite powerful

Seems to be quite a few who I saw a bit of at the TE event at Liverpool

Super background info, Rose. I haven't seen a livestream of her since last spring but that was very impressive.

There's quite a lot of names in the draw that I don't know, some I do know and don't rate, and obviously some younger ones which - as paulisi says - can make a big difference.

Although, to be fair, I don't know how old the foreign opponents are either and some of them must be 2012 born.

But, net net, we do seem to have had a LARGE number of GBR losses today hmm

There were no foreign 2012 born in the main draw by acceptance and only 3 in qualifying. Two foreign 2012 born came through qualifying- Korana and Shina. Apart from the British girls with wildcards they were the only 2 2012 born girls in the main draw today - everyone else is 2011 . Shina beat Ingrid Dumitru today and Korana beat Papaya Douvall in the first round (although I dont rate Papaya that much) so obviously a couple of 2012 born players to keep an eye on

Thanks, Rose

Of course, it's going down a rabbit hole but it's also relevant when in the year the players are born - hence, the mid-year to mid-year rankings that some federations go by

But even just using the calendar year, it's interesting to know that some countries are getting their 2012-born players into the main draw

Just my gut feel, but contrary to yesterday, which I found rather disappointing, the results today have been a lot more positive

I've never rated Grace Bernstein - but she had a whole load of media attention, in the US, from agencies, IMG, what have you (and then didn't play for a while? Injured?)

Anwyay, Yanziye Zhang whooped her, winning 3 & 1 (you once mentioned, Rose, the anglicised name that Yanziye goes by but I've forgotten it, what was it again?)

(She'll have her work really cut out against Darina, who won 0 & 0 today, but hey)

And Grace put pay to Khadija and her highly unorthodox left-hand, right-hand game

And will play Hermione

April Sackflame beat the 11th seed too

In the boys, Oskar beat the 15th seed, and Kamran got a win too

(Other matches still to finish/play)

Judy Zhang. She played the LTA tournaments under that name until she started playing tennis Europes (and represented GB) I believe she had to then match the name on her passport. Everyone still calls her Judy though!

Apart from those mentioned by CD second seed Liv Zingg posted a win, but 4th seed Sofia Tatu lost. Milica Milojevic is the one Brit yet to complete, currently 3-4 against a Canadian.
