No formulae, no spreadsheets, but I do take time to study the runners and riders form from last year, and indeed sometimes earlier when I know last year to have been unrepresentative.

What sort of level of players have they been competitive with and beating. how many tournaments have they been playing and is that likely to change ( clearly relevant to juniors with injuries also a factor for some ), have they been trending better ( or worse ) as the year has progressed?? Essentially just come to a general assessment  and consider possibilties for improvement ( again young players jump to mind and that is a difficult assessment ) or maybe going the other way ( say other end of the age scale though few GB players actually get old, just retire ).

Take that all together, controversially add in the occasional gut feeling, and come up with rankings. And end up getting beaten by folk just taking punts 

Whatever, I do enjoy going through the process each year and then seeing how I do.
