"I love this tournament, I really enjoyed playing here last year. The organization is incredible, the stadium field, the people; I'm excited." she said

Flora lost but took the 9th seed to a 2nd set tie-break 1-6 6-7(1)

Boys

Yes, rather disappointing for Charlie

But South American players on clay are dangerous

Viktor+ and Oliver+ won their R1 doubles

Girls

Hannah's 15 year-old opponent is only ranked JR 1027 (!) so anything less than a pretty expeditive score would have been a big surprise

She now plays Sol Guidi, from Argentinia, who is JR 58 and recently won a J200 on clay, and made the final in another, and played adult events on clay last month - the girl is a true clay courter so will be more challenging

Julieta Pareja is the dangerous unseeded player in the bottom half

Both Allegra+ and Flora+ got a win in the doubles, but Freya+ lost

(Hannah's not playing doubles so gets a day off today)

Oh yes

She's just turned 16, and had a wildcard into qualis at Roland Garros this year

The FFT are pinning a lot of hopes on her

But she's nowhere near as tall or powerful as her brother (for a girl, obviously)

And doesn't have his quiet confidence on the court - she looks like a rabbit in the headlights most of the time

But I think she might be a 'slow-burner' sort of player, she'll grow into herself as she gets older, and her tennis will show that

NB There was a funny interview quite recently with Gio, standing next to Daphnée, towering above her, and that much older, a huge young man next to a 'normal' looking younger girl, and he'd playing a big adult event, and Daphnée had just lost in some low-key event, and he was asked whether they played together, and he said, yes, sometimes

And then whether he ever let her win
Him: "No !!!!! Never !!!'
The outrage of the suggestion
Sibling rivalry - you've got to love it

Disappointingly , Hannah went down in 3 sets and Allegra also lost.

but more remarkably and impressively, Freya beat the young American second seed in 3 sets! Well done to her

Yes

If you're trying to be positive, you could say that Hannah lost, on clay, to an Argentinian girl who had recently won a J200 and was finalist in anther one, on clay

However, that doesn't really cut it ...... still pretty disappointing

But, yes again, what an amazing win for Freya !!!!

Kristina P made the SFs of Roland Garros so knows her way round a clay court

And Freya pipped her at the post in the third set

(Sister Annika had already lost, and they lost their doubles, so I guess the Penickova family are getting out of Mexico asap)

Does anyone know of changes to Hannah's set up that may have contributed to this seasons form?

She has moved to the NTC I think and there have been concerns raised on this forum that it is maybe a rather sterile environment and somewhere like Loughborough or another centre with more young players would help.

The year since the Orange Bowl last year has been frankly disappointing with little apparent progress and in drop in junior rankings. I hope someone is addressing this for her...

Big Wigan Warriors fan our Freya. Way to go girl. Always one youngster who breaks through when you are least expecting and not even on her preferred surface! Well done Freya!
