Boys & Girls: J500 Osaka, Japan, hard (Week 39)

The Osaka Mayor's Cup has been held as a top level junior event for 31 years, but only one Brit has won a singles title (Martin Lee in 1995).  As usual the field here is not as strong as at most J500 tournaments (particularly in the girls event where the top seed is ranked 34), and Oliver Bonding will be looking to build on his first M25 win last week. His wildcard opponent has only played 2 events this year, but he did win his last one.

Allegra's opponent is born in 2010

In the girls, a lot of the wildcards and qualifiers are actually very young - I think there's two 2011-girls playing here, in the main draw, and a couple of 2010-ers

I don't think I've ever seen quite such a clutch of very young players in an event of this level

Would have thought especially with a weaker field this would have been a good opportunity for Hannah klugman to get some points but maybe she is prioritising the senior British tournaments coming up?

Personally, I think Hannah needs the time out to go back to the drawing board a bit - she withdrew from Osaka here, right after the US Open - and probably the right thing - time to look at the big picture and see what's not quite working rather than chase points

Oli and Allegra both won their opening doubles. Oli may be tested in round 2, by an opponent who was in the top 40 at the start of the year, and has reached the quarters or semis of his last 3 J200 events (and took a set off US Open champion Rafael Jodar at Wimbledon)

Oli wasn't troubled by the Korean, but Allegra narrowly missed out.

Unusually all the top 8 seeds have reached the quarters. The one Oli faces is the Korean who has the unusual record of having lost to the same player (Charlie Robertson) in the last 3 slams. Kim has a good record though on Asian hardcourts. Oli+ squeaked through their doubles
