Boys & Girls: U14 European Junior Championships, Most, Czech Republic (Week 37)

This year the European Junior Championships moved from July to September, starting this week with the under 14s. Normally the host nation has 4 entries and everyone else 2, but we have 3 boys here, presumably because they are ranked 1-3 in Europe.

Boys R1 (L128)

(1) Eric Lorimer bye

(2) Niall Pickerd-Barua bye

(3) Scott Watson bye

Girls R1 (L128)

(15) Megan Knight bye

(9) Daniella Britton bye

Very strong team here. Would be nice for some more success. Tough on clay though.

Eric, Niall and Scott all started at the national
Academy in Loughborough last week. Great that they are all training together now, should bring them all on even more

The 2 girls not accepted into it though.

Looking forward to this! Glad to see the boys have got a place at Loughborough. Though I am surprised the girls haven't.

Any specific reason why? Megan surely is our best under 14 up and comer at the moment?

Daniella isnt too bad either,

I would have thought they didn't have a group there at the right level

There's no point in being at the Academy if you're basically just getting individual lessons. And there's no point being in a group with players who are a lot older and better

No idea if that's the reason but it's certainly a valid concern

You can find links to live scores and live streaming from 2 courts here. They are running late today, so only 2 of our five's round 2 opponents are currently known

Boys R2

(1) Eric Lorimer v Patrick Breen (IRL) or Toni Escarda Pineiro (ESP)
Marek Smejcky (POL) v (3) Scott Watson
Christian Gorgin (SWE) v (2) Niall Pickerd-Barua

Girls R2

Sophie Triquart (GER) or Mila Bastianelli (FRA) v (15) Megan Knight
Julia Perera Vega (MLT) or Hannelore Daniels (BEL) v (9) Daniella Britton

That would be my guess. There were 3 spaces as they had 3 leavers. Obviously made sense to give the spaces to the 3 boys as they are the same level and same school year. As the top 3 14U boys in Europe no one can say they dont deserve the opportunity!

Megan is 2011 born so, although eligible, would be more likely to be considered for next year. Hollie is the nearest one there in age and level to her but theres still quite a gap. Daniella is 2010 born so this would have been her year for entry but she is the same school year as Megan so maybe the LTA thought she would be better waiting. However there are arguably some 2008/2009 born who would be ahead of her for a space - Edie Griffiths, Freya Peet, Tegan Bush spring to mind

Scott has just won his match in a third-set TB

But it was a pretty poor match, from both boys, and Scott's line-calling is pretty dodgy - finding a mark that fits your call is not the same as finding the right mark

However, he lives to fight another day and maybe the nerves are over, and he's had a good long time on the clay, it'll all pick up

Niall is on the way to victory

But Eric has lost the first set

Results on the order of play page are showing a 6-1 6-0 loss for Megan against Sophie Triquart (from Germany). Thats a big surprise if its right (isnt showing on the actual draw yet)

Yes.

But Sophie is a very good player, with a LOT of ITF experience, I saw her play this summer, and all her events have been on clay, tons of J60s and J100s

Frankly, with a group I was talking to, Sophie was the favourite here in this match

I'm suprised at the score though - I though it would at least be closer

Agree. At this level theres not really a definite winner for any match. However, like you said, I would have expected a defeat for Meg to have been after a close fought match - not 1&0

Not the only British seeding upset as Eric went on to lose, albeit narrowly. Not really a shock though, as Spain beat us twice in the European Summer Cup, winning all 4 singles matches (Eric's opponent today beating Scott)

Boys R2

Toni Escarda Pineiro (ESP) d. (1) Eric Lorimer 6-3 2-6 7-5
(3) Scott Watson d. Marek Smejcky (POL) 6-2 3-6 7-6(4)
(2) Niall Pickerd-Barua d. Christian Gorgin (SWE) 7-5 6-1

R3

Mattis Thorsnes (NOR) v (3) Scott Watson
Charles Rossillol (FRA) v (2) Niall Pickerd-Barua

Girls R2

Sophie Triquart (GER) d. (15) Megan Knight 6-1 6-0
Hannelore Daniels (BEL) v (9) Daniella Britton

Daniella was the latest to fall to an underranked Spaniard (who won a J100 ITF recently) so that just leaves Scott and Niall

Boys R3

(3) Scott Watson d. Mattis Thorsnes (NOR) 6-2 6-0
(2) Niall Pickerd-Barua d. Charles Rossillol (FRA) 5-7 6-4 6-2

R4

(13) Alexandr Tiukchenko (UKR) v (3) Scott Watson
(16) Matyas Marsik (CZE) v (2) Niall Pickerd-Barua

Girls R2

Sophie Triquart (GER) d. (15) Megan Knight 6-1 6-0
(9) Daniella Britton d. Hannelore Daniels (BEL) 6-4 7-5

R3

Paola Pinera Celorio (ESP) d. (9) Daniella Britton 6-4 7-5

Niall and Scott keep on course for a semi showdown, but ominously another of the Spanish European Summer Cup winning team is up next for Niall (Niall lost fairly easily to Izan in the Summer Cup final). Scott is on the streamed court 1 scheduled for 8am BST tomorrow

Boys R4

(3) Scott Watson d. (13) Alexandr Tiukchenko (UKR) 6-4 5-7 6-0
(2) Niall Pickerd-Barua d. (16) Matyas Marsik (CZE) 6-3 6-3

QF

(11) Sebastian Tejerina (POL) v (3) Scott Watson
(5) Izan Banares Lasala (ESP) v (2) Niall Pickerd-Barua
