Girls: J300 Roehampton, grass (Week 27)

Hannah had no business losing to her at Roland Garros, so I absolutely expect a routine victory on grass.

Live scores are showing on the LTA site, but with play suspended. Hollie has an early break against Kristina. Hep, Isabelle and Gabia are all a break down in the first set

Some fine results today as Ruby Cooling, Erin Pearce and Gabia Paskauskas beat higher ranked players (Ruby's result against the 6th seed being outstanding). Mimi and Hannah progressed in straights, but there was disappointment for Mika, and frustration for Brooke, who was edged out of a match against the young Brazilian, mentioned by CD, she was close to winning (similarly for Hep). Isabella is still on court, having taken the first set against the number 1 seed. However the Czech appears to have gained the upper hand since then. Hollie seemed to have a good tussle with Kristina, often being up in her opponent's service games, but unable to recover from an early break in the decider

For anyone wanting to go down, it's open to the public, official

BUT you have to get a ticket. It's free. And can be done on site but has to be by the app. So you have to download the app if you don't have it. And be careful because when it says free, they add on a £10 charity donation - which you can take off - but you might not be paying attention and then you've paid a tenner to some charity without meaning to.

However, on the other hand, the stands and seating are all still up, because of the wheelchair event that's taking place too. Which makes it a lot more grand than the last time I was there. And comfortable seating for quite a few courts.

And the clubhouse is open, so you're right next to all the players, and team members etc, which is quite cool

Re the girls:

WINS

Erin Pearce - great job. really nice win. AND she looks so smiley when she plays, it's endearing

Ruby Cooling - now, Ruby played well, all credit to her, she was up for this. BUT Alena K was going through the motions, no more, and didn't seem to care. Very strange. I can't help but think something was going on behind the scenes.....

Hannah K - the crowd were expecting sparkles, and they didn't really get that, certainly not at first, when it was quite a battle, Hannah on the back foot quite a lot. But she buckled down well, it wasn't easy, and then managed to get a hold of the match, and suddenly it was all a lot easier

Gabia - has rather a 'deliberate' sort of game, looks very taught. But it's solid, and she applied herself right to the end. Good win

Mimi - like Hannah, she struggled at first - but far more so. Seemed a little flat-footed. She had to dig really really deep to get that first set -more by willpower than tennis, really. And then the tennis seemed to get better, thankfully. Not an easy win, though

LOSSES

Brooke's was a heart-breaker. It was her match. Victoria is great, really creative with the ball, but sometimes a bit too much so, makes mistakes, and Brooke had better pace and depth for a lot of it. I don't think Brooke quite believed she could do it, whereas Barros was roaring like a bull, raring for a fight Brooke was very upset, and rightly so

Hollie also came very close. But her loss was more to do with maturity and match management. Hollie has to learn that you can't cry during the match (after is fine); she doesn't control her emotions very well when it gets tight and it costs her - get mad, not sad, Hollie. (Kristina still isn't that great on grass but she certainly got better as the match went on)

Mika is really not clicking at the moment. She has big points to defend at junior Wimbly but she's having real trouble putting her points together - she's rather back to the 'blast it and hope for the best' approach.

Izzy Wong started well, against the top seed who (like Penickova) couldn't get her reach or range at the start. Didn't stay to the end but thought it would end up that way.

Allegra -didn't see more than a couple of balls

Flora - decent effort but outplayed overall

Hep - had a problem with her right knee in the third set - but Hep finds a way to lose a lot of matches she should win, knee or no knee. The second set was lost way to softly when it came to the crunch.

Daniela Piani - quality match - definitely one of the better ones. She seems taller than when I last saw her - she's a tall girl ! Good tennis from both and fair score.

Isa Lacy - had a lot of support and had her chances in the second - was playing better and better - but couldn't take the set points and that was her chance blown.

Anyone at Roehampton?  Is Hannah really being outclassed by the JWR78 or is she maybe looking for an early finish to the week to save her energy for Wimbledon?  Currently lost the first set 6-4.

I couldn't go today

But from the scores, Hannah has lost the second set too

In a way, it's maybe for the good

Without doing it deliberately, it's easy to sit back on your laurels a bit when you've had a brilliant week

A good dose of reality does not harm

Super win from Gabia Paskauskas though, 6-3 6-1, over the 15th seed

I did wonder if she had signed in for Lucky Losers she might have ended playing Emma today.... just a thought

I think another 10 players needed to have pulled out. I wonder if she just wasn't up for the fight this week.
