Boys & Girls: J500 Milan, Italy, clay (Week 21)

And a super two-set win by Hannah too, over the dangerous Japanese ex top-junior, now doing very well in adults

Good win by Hannah. She has the unseeded Yelyzaveta Kotliar next who beat the 8th seed and has had some good results on clay over the past few weeks.

Mimi will play the American Iva Jovic.  No matches are easy at this point.

Charlie Roberston has taken the 1st set against the 9th seed Miguel Tobon by an impressive 6-1

and Charlie made it 3/3. He has to take on Mees Rottgering, who has a strong CV, including a M15 final this year and the Australian Open semis. Charlie did edge him out in Offenbach last month though. Kotliar beat Mimi easily last week, while Iva Jovic is moving up rapidly through the WTA ranks (405) having reached a W75 final earlier in the month

Is there a reason why all the Brits are playing with non Brits in doubles i.e. is it a plan to team them up with juniors from around the world that compliment their styles, or do they just get on better with their chosen partners than their compatriots?

Mimi and Hannah are an established GB team in comps - girls doubles.

Apparently weather in Milan has been very poor and matches today and on Tuesday were moved to indoors hard for many. Hence today must have helped Charlie vs a strong South American clay player. Well done to him nonetheless!

Hannah lost a tight first set, having been a break up, I believe

And then had 5 SPs in the second set before losing that too, in a really long match (for two sets)

But she's had some very good clay court practice; better than many of us would have expected

Mimi also lost the first, but won the second and is a break up in the third

Emerson Jones has won. As has Tyra Grant

Charlie has lost the first set 3-6

Not able to follow too closely (too much work to do!) but Mimi lost in the 3rd in the end in a tie break.  Match was over 3 and a half hours.

Mimi and Hannah now have to play together in the doubles QF.

Charlie has just lost too 6-4, 6-4.

So close for all our QFs but a really good showing for GB on our least favourite surface.

A high powered semifinal line-up with top seed Nicolai Budkov Kjaer, 8th seed Jangjun Kim and 6th seed Kaylan Bigun joining Charlie's conqueror. Top seed Emerson Jones and second seed Tyra Grant fill the places in the girls draw

Boys QF

(16) Mees Rottgering (NED) d. Charlie Robertson 6-3 6-4

Girls QF

Yelyzaveta Kotliar (UKR) d. (3) Hannah Klugman 6-4 7-5
(14) Iva Jovic (USA) d. (5) Mingge Xu 7-6(3) 3-6 7-6(3)

It is a reasonable question to ask about the boys (not the girls who often play together - Mimi and Hannah winning through today).  Oli and Viktor have played 7 tournaments this year, Charlie 6, and the only time any of them have played with a Brit was Charlie (with Ben Gusic Wan) in Australia.  I don't know the reason why though (on some occasions there were no other Brits in the tournament, but there were plenty of tournaments with opportunities to play with fellow Brits).

Viktor+ won through today to meet up with the Australian Open champions (who beat Viktor with a Czech partner then)

Boys QF

(6) Frydrych/Rottgering (GBR/NED) d. (4) Bonding/Marinkov (GBR/AUS)  6-4 7-5

SF

Jones/Robertson (AUS/GBR) v (5) Tobon/Zeitune (COL/ARG)
(6) Frydrych/Rottgering (GBR/NED) v (2) Exsted/Woestendick (USA)

Girls QF

(1) Klugman/Xu d. (5) Sonobe/Stojsavljevic (JPN/GBR) 6-3 3-6 [10-8]

SF

(1) Klugman/Xu v Pastikova/Stusek (CZE/GER)

Mixed results this morning: Hannah and Mimi were edged out in their match tiebreak but Charlie+ came through theirs. Viktor+ will be on court later on - his doubles partner Mees Rottgering is currently on court playing his singles. In the girls singles Hannah and Mimi's conquerors both lost so it is a 1 v 2 final (Emerson Jones v Tyra Grant)

Not British but the girls winner was Emerson Jones; Emerson is 15 and is now ranked 4th; her brother is Hayden Jones, he is slightly older but is ranked 4th and was Charlie R's partner in Milan

Two siblings in the top 10 (and in the in year Race ranking for the World Junior Finals ,they are both number 1!). is pretty unprecedented, I would say.

Well done, Family Jones.
