Girls: 2024 U16/U18 Junior National Championships, NTC, acrylic (Weeks 14/15)

Hollie Smart was a little out of sorts, a little given to overly-dramatic exclamations and 'drooping' when she missed a ball
Maybe the knock-on effects from winning last week?

Anyway, she lost to Sophya Devas who made her age and power show, 6-2 7-5

Edie Griffiths, the other 2009-born wildcard, also lost

The four other winners today were:

Marelie Raath; Ruby Cooling; Erin Pearce; Isabella Wong

To follow up on the 'dodgy' rankings used, five qualifiers beat direct main draw entrants today
Two other qualifiers won, against wildcards
So 7 out of 8 matches were won by qualifers
Allegra K Davies should get a little shout-out as the only MD player to actually win !

Thanks for sharing Rose. That's a really interesting read. Back in the day (and realise I am starting to sound like an old codger), the draws were up to 64 in size. For a long time entries were based on a list of players you had beaten (you submitted your best results on your entry form) until ratings were iintroduced. And then eventually qualifying was added.

The grass court championships in particular were a huge festival over 2 weeks: 16 and 12 & under in week one, and 18 and 14 & under in week two. Many families came down for the whole fortnight.

Alongside the national championships were winter series events in three age groups (18, 16, 14) held over two and a half days, with all players guaranteed 5 matches.

Grass court nationals were cancelled, as were 12 and under nationals, and the junior winter series events disappeared too. But often these things go full circle.

I have to admit I dont remember these at all, so probably take much notice of junior tennis back in the day - Im guessing we are similarly aged, Vicman, Im late 50s.

when was this you are taking about, decade wise - I cant remember them going to Nottingham at all or being on Sky!

They went to Nottingham in 1991 after the centre was opened earlier that year for the Federation Cup. Only on Sky that first year. Tim Henman won in 1992. Were sponsored by Midland Bank and I think held there for a decade or so.

Gosh I mustnt have paid attention! I remember the senior nationals later in the 90s at Telford, with Henman and Rusedksi going at it, and they were interesting for a few years. Id often thought they would be nice to resurrect but tennis has moved on.

I posted a list a couple of years ago on here of the ones on the roll of honour on display on the court fence at Surbiton, the ones I saw when I was there for the nationals probably 3 years ago.  I'll try and find it on here but don't think I've got the photos any longer. But it didn't go back beyond 10 years or so.

Edit:   I've had a quick search and can't find those lists, I thought it was at nationals in 2021 I saw it but it isn't on that thread. May keep looking if time.

The girls have kicked off inside

Good that they didn't hang around waiting, the weather forecast was presumably pretty convincing

Only three matches though so the schedule is re-jigged

Mimi is the first one through, 6-1 6-1, over Allegra

Very clean hitting and the score was fair

Mika took a lot of time to win her first set 6-4

Mia was playing well, pushing Mika to make mistakes, and getting some nice balls into place that caught Mika by surprise

Hannah R v Erin is a very close match ....

I watched some of Mimis match, thought she was was trying a few things out TBH. Both 16 years olds, but did show difference in class. Some tougher competition for Mimi hopefully moving through the draw. Her success in Monastir seems to indicate she is transitioning well to seniors.

Mika, not surprisingly, found the second set a lot easier

So no upsets so far....

Hannah raced to a 5-1 lead but has lost the last 3 games and took a fall in the last game.  Serving again for the set.
