Girls: 2024 U16/U18 Junior National Championships, NTC, acrylic (Weeks 14/15)

Thanks for the insights, Rose
Yes, I also saw a fair bit of Izzy Britton v Rosie
First time I'd seen Rosie play (even on livestream) and I've always been a fan of Izzy's (do you know if she's been injured? She seemed to go AWOL for quite a long period after her Junior Wimbly U14 exploits)
It was a good match - two years between them obviously makes a big difference at this age so well done to Rosie who was quite solid and plays pretty well (like Daniella, she's quite assured at the net, quite lucid - not that it's a big part of their game but still nice to see)
(NB Daniella will beat Ophelia soon ....)

Is that said with sarcastic overtones ? smile

I watched a little at the start and have only just come back

What happened?

Not at all surprised by the Tegan v Eloise score

Well done to Freya, too, for getting through her match very easily

To be honest, the 20 mins I've seen of Prisadnikova v Mititelu has not been very impressive - you'd never think that was the top seed for National Championships playing

It was yes. top seed called a medical  time out(clearly not injured just to stop Momentum after being down 3-0) but to be fair the other girl did the same after losing the next 3 games after that so it evens itself out. I dont mind players getting the edge on there opponents but faking injuries is pathetic

Well, twentytoone, I don't know about Teddy (although she does seem a rather bad-tempered young lady on the court )

But Sophie Bekker has been crying and throwing herself on the ground since the second point.

Now, I think she may have some niggle, but she runs around like a rabbit, in a rally of ten shots or so, then waits to see if her last shot is in (no, it's out) and THEN gingerly 'collapses' on the floor, complaining loudly about her ankle - if I were a sponsor, or her coach, I'd be finding someone different

Read your message coup then proceeded to tune into the match and not even 3 minutes later is she on the floor gain. I am not particularly empressed and it is a little bit silly. I understand being bad tempered on the court and have to remind myself these are only children but they need to learn to let go of there anger rather than letting it continue otherwise they have very little chnace of making it very far

The problem is that she may well have a genuine ankle/calf injury
I assume she does (though not quite as she's making out)
But that's not the point
And, yes, they're kids, and of course it's a tense time etc
But I've officially umpired and overseen/supervised countless junior tennis matches, at all levels
It's pretty easy to see how things are
And there comes a point where, if you're genuinely injured you need to retire, and if you're not, you need to stop acting up

Very pleased to see Leticia Romanova doing well and coming through her match against Edie Griffiths today (Edie is a year younger but she's one of the LTA top picks, and got a wildcard here - she'll have another chance next year)

And Isabelle Britton too who hasn't quite come on as I expected but still has some stand-out qualities (and still has quite a lot of tape on her shoulder)

I've got a soft spot for both girls

Hollie Smart is the only 2009-er left - the others are all 2008

Hollie should beat top-seed, Teddy, I reckon

Tegan has played a lot less tennis than Leticia and will probably be a lot fresher, and favourite, in that match

Isabella Walker looked a level or two above Arabella Loftus

And I've never seen Freya Peet play, so hoping to catch that tomorrow against Izzy Britton tomorrow

Just for context

This year the U16 tournament is primarily for girls born in calendar years 2008 and 2009

The 2023 U16 final saw Hannah Klugman (2009) defeat Mika Stojsavljevic (2008) 6-4 6-0

Semi-finalists were Tegan Bush (2008) and Lois Newberry (2007)

Obviously, although eligible, neither Hannah nor Mika are playing here. Lois is now too old. Tegan is 3rd seed this year and into the QFs

As a feed-up though, the 2023 U14 final saw:

Hollie Smart (2009) def. Edie Griffiths (2009)

Rosie Cho (2010) and Ophelia K Davies (2009) were semi-finalists

Hollie is also into the QFs this year (but is year 1)

The 2022 U14 final (i.e. the direct feed-up here, as it goes in two-year tranches) saw:

Eloise Newberry (2008) def. Tegan Bush (2008)

Sophia Kovacheva (2008) and Sophie Bekker (2008) were semi-finalists

EDITED to get the semi-finalists in the right years

Interesting Tegan lost to Eloise in the 2022 final and then absolutely thrashed her 0,1 yesterday.
