Only saw a little bit of a couple of boys matches yesterday. To be honest - they were pretty woeful (a bit amazing that these were players at the GB nationals)

The Murray Watters (2009) v Louis Stewart (2008) match, though, this morning is quite a good watch

ADD: Louis ended up edging the match in a MTB. Good effort from both boys.

The qualifying seemed to have lots of seeding upsets - half the seeds didnt make the main draw in boys and girls. Are these upsets or is it more that seeding is hard to get right at this level and much less reliable?

I think the seedings are nonsense - they're an admin thing, based on some metric or other - but not an indication of any value

A lot of the matches today going to three sets

Liam Channon (2008), bucking the trend, played a good match to beat Brandon Ratanavong (2009) without too much trouble (but Brandon is a decent player for 2009, certainly aided by being a well-built boy for his age)

I've always liked Liam - he makes it look relatively easy on the court, which is a skill in itself

Seeding is based on the LTA ranking for 16U
However, as they get more ranking points for winning a 16U Grade 3 than they do for making the semi final of a J30 the LTA ranking is very inaccurate once you get past 12U!

Thanks Rose - and lots of seeding upsets in main draw top half; mark Ceban seems to have a decent path now!

 Yes, thanks

And that would certainly explain why it's such nonsense biggrin

Rhys Lawlor had quite a fight in his opener, won after losing the first set and it was 7-5 in the 3rd set

For context:

Generally, there is rather less 'playing up' in the boys - the ages are more respected

Last year's event saw an amazing final

2023 U16

Ben Gusic Wan (2007) def. Oliver Bonding (2007)

The semi-finalists were Alfie King and Zach Hamrouni

In the 2023 U14:

Niall Pickerd-Barua (2010) def. Eric Lorimer (2010)

Niall, despite being well young for this year's event, came through yesterday to make the QFs

The semifinalists were Brandon Ratanavong (2009) and Nate de Mariveles (2009)

In the 2022 U14 (the direct feed-up):

Liam Channon (2008) def. Oilver Page (2008) (good final, that was)

The two semifinalists were Jesse Clarkson (2008) and Kouros Anssarizadeh (2008)

Both Liam and Jesse are still en piste this year in the QFs
