Boys: J500 Blumenau, Brazil, clay (Week 10)

Hot quick conditions have favoured attacking play making the first set a good watch. Oli claimed the first break at 5-5, holding to zero to take the first set 7-5

Honda has begun to leak errors, giving Oli opportunities to break - and he takes one to lead 7-5 2*-1

Just to add:

Oli's previous highest counter was 210 - so this 500 pointer is a real gamechanger

Technically I believe that the 500 will replace a 100 for one week

But the 210 will roll off next week (as it's from the J300 Indian Wells) so, basically, his 500 will replace the 210, giving him 290 extra points

Take him well into the top 20 and close

to the top 10. Nice!

And Oli is up to JWR 13

Brilliant jump of 19 places

(Although, again, I do think he's got 110 singles points coming off next week)

The ITF has kindly done the research I baulked at, and come up with the stats on previous British boys to win equivalent Grade A titles. Here is an extract from their article

"The 16-year-old is only the fourth British boy to win a J500 singles title and the first since George Morgan, who topped the podium at the 2010 Orange Bowl. Hannah Klugman was the last Briton to win a J500 after winning the 2023 Orange Bowl.

This is gratification for all the work I have been putting in for a long time now, said Bonding, who has risen 19 places to No. 13 in the ITF World Tennis Tour boys rankings following his success in Brazil.

This was my first semi-final in almost a year and I obviously havent won any titles in that time so I am just so happy to win here. It really is a privilege to win here in such a prestigious place and I am just so happy. It is pure elation.

Coming into the Junior Grand Slams and particularly Roland Garros [In June], it puts me in a great space. I will take a lot of confidence from here winning on clay but I need to keep working hard.

Great to hear that Oli sent his opponent on his bike in the final. Just hope he doesn't turn out to be anything like the last highly rated junior we had whose name was Oli and whose surname ended in -ing.....
