Other events, 2024 - week 8

Daniella Britton got comprehensively beaten by the Chinese girl, Sun

6-1 6-1

The result was not really a suprise but it was a shame that Dani seemed ultra nervous, and was a shadow of herself (which is partly to Sun's credit but not all)

Never seen it before either but Sun (who speaks very good English, supposedly) told the interviewer that she would not be anwering any questions on the podium

Dani, on the other hand, gave a very competent speech, even though she'd lost - better than a lot of adult players, but nice and natural.

The interview himself was dreadful, really clumsy and akward.

TBH, Dani was the only person who came out of the prize-giving with any repsect :)

 Youre welcome smile

And, yes, absolutely

I wasn't completely blown away

And I presume the LTA don't rate her too highly as I don't believe she's ever been one of those selected for team events

But Daniella is born in November (i.e. she's young for the year)

And there were definitely a lot of things to like in her game

I'll be interested to see how she progesses too

And Eric Lorimer (from Devon) takes the title in Essonne

6-4 7-5

Excellent final

Eric was the runner-up in our U14 national championships last year (but only very closely pipped)

Again, there's some nice tennis there - he played well - came back from 0-3 down in the second

The boy's got the makings of a very good serve, hits a heavy ball, especially on his forehand, doesn't mind coming forward. He's a bit heavy-footed and slow to react at times - he needs to keep reminding himself to be a bit more on the ball

Congratulations to Eric, who played well in the bit I saw - unfortunately ending with a no let serve ace on matchpoint. I think Eric will move to 3 in the Tennis Europe rankings as a result (British players moved up a few places as a result of the success in reaching the Winter Cup finals - as the team tournaments can count strongly to individual rankings. As a result Niall Pickerd-Barua moved to TE5 this week.)

Both Niall and Eric should be in the Super Category event in Sweden next week, within a much stronger field

She certainly has a good temperament, going by the match I saw against the Russian girl, which she handled very calmly. I enjoyed watching her play.

Well done Eric. Good to hear weve got several youngsters coming through on both the boys and girls side.
