2024 Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers - France vs GB - 12/13 April (indoor clay)

Different tines, different circumstances, but Emma today stepping forward and pummelling second serves brought back great memories of her US Open title run

Ive just got in and watch the highlights. Emma was fantastic today. I thought Katie would play twice, but unfortunately she didnt do very well today or was Parry just really good.
Tough decision for Annie.

Annie's job is to win the tie. She was sufficiently ruthless last time to drop Jodie after a poor opening singles match to make sure we beat Sweden and needs to do the same with Katie now. Garcia would still be the strong favourite against Fran but it's worth giving her a chance rather than let Katie be bageled again when she's clearly out of her depth on clay. Now is not the time for favouritism or sentiment, it's probably our only chance as even if Emma beats Parry (by no means a given) I can't see Heather and Harriet winning the doubles.

Yes Im also with you. If Katie would have come close today, you would expect Annie to stick with her, but because it was so one-sided, especially against a player with a one-handed backhand. (which was not exposed at all). I think it would be time to give Fran a shot.

if Annie did go with Katie and she lost heavily again, then I think that would be seen as bad/weak leadership(not wanting to ruffle her highest ranked players, feathers,) but if she went with Fran and Fran lost heavily, then I dont think she could expect too much criticism for the reason that Katie didnt look great today.

If she went with Katie and she won it would be seen as good leadership. But if she went with Fran and she won it would probably be Annies best moment as captain.

Anne, you just select who you think is most likely to get a win - ie. don't you bother just now about what might be seen as strong or weak leadership.

I may have suggested this as a plan before

It did look as if Garcia might have had a shoulder problem so is there any possibility that the French will drop Garcia and if so who would take her place?

Yes, that's exactly what we loved biggrin

I've only briefly flicked through the French sites

There seems to be flutterings that Julien will pick Burel today

But not really based on anything concrete (apart from the fact Caro lost biggrin)

I think it will very much depend how Caro feels

Ha Emma loses track and thinks she's served it out, but not yet.

5-1*

And some big smiles and laughs at the mistake.

That was my favourite bit biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Might rather undermine Emma's 'ultra high intelligence' arguments, bless her, but the tennis was just wonderful

Also, I was rather snarky about Emma and her BJK commitment when she failed to go and support the girls in Glasgow, I think it was, and was doing a launch in Harrods instead.

Just want to take it all back, and apologise to Emma

She was superb yesterday, amazing for the team, and a real star on court

I thought it was refreshing that she wasn't following her score but just focussing on each point. Maybe if Jodie and Harriet did the same, they'd not combust.

Garcia v Boulter on the BBC. Is this confirmed? Much speculation on this thread.

Not 100% on the rules but they can still change now I think.
