Although the tournament is listed by the ITF as a hard court tournament all the action today (and yesterday) was on clay courts. Playing a similar ranked Italian on clay would probably be a tougher prospect for Charlie than on hard, and Charlie did indeed lose quite easily. He is seeded 2 in the doubles though with his Polish partner from last week.
