Boys & Girls: J500 Osaka, Japan, hard (Week 41)

Mimi finally adds a few doubles points (she is so proficient at J300 level that winning in Beijing merely added to her reserve counters, not her overall points)

Boys QF

Girls QF

(11) Kristiana Sidorova (***) d. (3) Mingge Zu 5-7 6-4 7-6(4)

Doubles SF

(1) Quevedo/Xu (USA/GBR) d. Brunkel/Wan (DEN/TPE) 7-5 6-1

F

(1) Quevedo/Xu (USA/GBR) v Kinosh1ta/Sonobe (JPN)

As a side thought, does the fact Mimi has gone to the top of the British list in the girls rankings mean that , come the Junior BJK Cup Finals, Mimi will have to play number one with Hannah two?

I am not sure if that practically makes any difference - is a Mimi, Hannah line up more or less likely to win matches than a Hannah, Mimi one? No idea to be honest, but just thought I would raise it.

The rules are that they play according to the order submitted by the nominations deadline (Hannah as number 1) unless they apply to the ITF for a change in order (flipflopping a few places is unlikely to be a reason for such an application).  Submitted orders do not necessarily reflect ITF junior rankings as some players concentrate on pro events and others play mainly regional events.

 Ok cool, understood and clear!

Mimi+ lost their doubles 8-10 in the MTB :(

But the girl she lost to in singles, in the third-set TB, has just beaten Samsonova (seeded 2) in two easy sets

Sidorova will now play young Emerson Jones (AUS) in the final

(Emerson has played with Hannah in doubles, and people may well remember her from junior Wimbly where she lost to Mika, and she's played Hannah, and Mimi and Hep, and more, so is high on the GB-watchers visilibity list)

Would the Tennis Europe 16 & Under rankings not be used in some cases? Think they were for the European Summer Cup qualifiers, where Klugman played at No. 2 and Xu at No.1.

The European Summer Cups are organised by Tennis Europe and TE under 16 rankings have to be used (Hannah being behind Mimi and Hep in those).  The Junior BJK Cup is organised by the ITF and their rules allow Federations to order as they see fit, providing there is justification from some ranking.  The exact rule is "Nominations of individual players in order of merit for singles, and the non-playing Captain, must be received by the ITF no later than eight (8) weeks before the scheduled first day of play of the Competition. National Associations shall take into account the position of their players in the ITF, ATP/WTA, regional and national rankings and current year regional and national championships results when deciding the Order of Merit."

Doubles F

 Kinosh1ta/Sonobe (JPN) d. (1) Quevedo/Xu (USA/GBR)  6-2 5-7 [10-8]

I imagine part of Mimi's team thinking of coming on this oriental trip, where there are few players at her level, was to garner enough points so that Mimi can enter slams next year and possibly be seeded without having to play additional junior tournaments.

I was thinking, could Mimi's participation on this trip be an attempt to get into the Top 10 by the year end to be able to get the more useful Junior Exempts to 25ks for being in the year end Top 10 than the almost useless JEs to 15ks (given she could get a JR to a 15k) she'd get for being ranked 11-20? It's quite a big ask though from where she was at the beginning of the trip.

And sorry to add questions but, with only J500 events left in Mexico and then Florida in Nov and Dec, can we assume Hannah wont reclaim the top British spot and Mimi will have that sewn up? Asking for a friend

I wondered that but she's withdrawn from the event next week (as have all the others) so then thought it was unlkely although - again - it's a lower ranked event so maybe it wouldn't have given Mimi any real points anyway. (Don't know why all the others withdrew though)

Yes that had occurred to me too.  She has certainly achieved the goal of entry to all the slams next year, and may have enough banked points to be a low seed at the Australian Open, but would need a couple of big tournaments in the late season North American swing if she wants to finish top 10.  We will see whether she decides to enter them again.

Hannah has enough tournaments left on her age related quota to be able to retake the British number 1 slot if she does significantly better than Mimi in the American swing which she has mentioned in a previous interview she is targeting. I doubt the British No. 1 slot is something either of them are bothered about though.

Would be great to get 2 girls on the top 10. Have we had that before?

Laura and Heather were both top 10 in 2009 but I'm not sure if it was in the same week(s).

Emerson Jones won the girls final and has the dubious honour of being compared with Ash Barty
