Week 36 - ATP Challenger 75 - Open Provence - Cassis, France (hard)

This takes me back to following Wardy's quest for the Top 100 a few years back! I recall that even took him to Challengers in places like Reunion Island.

Let's hope when (and I'm sure it's when) Liam breaks the 100 he stays fit so he can stick around in there a little longer...

Liam has some big points to defend from Israel ATP 250 in a few weeks, so it may only be temporary.

Looking likely a place in the final will be enough for Liam to finally break the Top 100

Not convinced - but willing for you to convince me.

Getting to the final will leave him on 609 points. That will be the same as David Goffin who is exactly WR 100 in the live rankings.  No idea who would be higher on count back.  Also 3 players behind him that could surmount the 609 points.

Or am I misreading something ?

I believe Broady would lose out on countback to Goffin having won less points at Slams/M1000 level.

Though overall he wouldn't need to score that many further points to end the year in the top 100.

Yes, 57 ( net 51 ) points due off on 02/10 from Israel last year, which could drop him back out of the top 100, but then just a further 15 (8+7) due off during the rest of this year.

Just reaching the SF here, he is currently live race #96.

Even if it were only for a week (initially) it would be something that could never be taken away from him.  And as Indi has said further down, apart from that he has very little else to defend this year.  One more decent run in a Challenger would hopefully see him end the year in the Top 100.

Got to get there first though, Liam smile

Liam does the double over Billy:

Final:  (1) Dan Added & Jonathan Eysseric (FRA/FRA) CR 186 (87+99) vs Liam Broady & Antoine Hoang (FRA) CR 567 (271+296)

From the bits I saw Mattia's first serve was dominant in the first set (12 aces) and he got off to a 4-0 lead, so Liam wasn't really in it. Second set Mattia's first serve had less impact, but Liam made too many unforced errors at key times, such as allowing Mattia to break for 4-3 and failing to capitalise on 4 second serves when the Italian served for the match.

Liam's last four defeats have come to Adam Walton, Liandro Riedi, Sho Shimbakuro and Mattia Bellucci. While every player has wins and losses, it feels like he doesn't quite have the weight of shot to establish himself in the Top 100. Am not saying he won't, but certainly has had multiple opportunities to do so this year.

Let's try and look at the positives still. Liam has still set a new career high ranking and only a whisker away from the top 100. He still has every chance of reaching that milestone. Good for him for keep perservering.

Yes you're quite right. Easy to project my own hopes for Liam onto any criticism. And ultimately his career won't be defined by a career high ranking of say No.99 versus 104. It will be the tournament finals and results at major events like Wimbledon and the Olympics.

No more luck for Liam in the doubles:

Final:  (1) Dan Added & Jonathan Eysseric (FRA/FRA) CR 186 (87+99) defeated Liam Broady & Antoine Hoang (FRA) CR 567 (271+296) by 6-0 4-6 [11-9]  hmm
