Qualifying for the US Open starts tomorrow at the Cary Leeds Center, with draws out later this evening. Charlie Robertson, Luca Pow, Hephzibah Oluwadare and Mika Stojsavljevic should be in qualifying. Henry Searle, Oliver Bonding, Ella McDonald, Mingge Xu, Hannah Klugman and Isabelle Lacy (via a Special Exempt) should be in the main draw, starting Sunday. Hannah Read is currently 4th alternate, so might make the qualifying draw if she has made the trip.
Mika's drawn the q1 seed, Gloria Nahum, who happens now to be ranked 36 and should, really, be in the main draw
Hep has a less scary first round but then will have to play the q2 seed to qualify, Buchnik (ISR) who's ranked 44
In the boys, Luca has a decent first match (a Brazilian lad ranked lower than him with all his points coming from clay). But, if he wins, he would then have to play the q1 seed (ranked 45)
Only Charlie seems to have an OK-ish chance of getting through (although, to be fair, he's the only one who's seeded so I guess that's logical)
She's got a potentially easier match up in the next round against a fellow 14 year old who had an easier first round than Mika against JWR 105. I guess any match will be hard against a player in a GS at their home tournament though.
Nice play from Mika. Down 3-5 in the second set tiebreak, but fights back to take it 7-5. Match tiebreak just starting.
and she won!
Bravo to that girl - how to take your US swing from zero to hero
But, yes, not done yet - Pareja is one of the big young stars in the US - think she plays a more conservative game than Gloriana - will need a slightly different approach
