Boys & Girls: 2023 European Championships U14/U18, clay (Week 29)

Normally there are European Championships at under14 under 16 and under 18 level, but this year's under 16 event (moved from Russia to Prerov in the Czech Republic) has been cancelled.   Nations other than the host are only allowed 2 representatives per event

We have our top ranked quartet in the under 14s (in Most, Czech Republic) who all have byes.

Our under 18s may find it challenging in Klosters, Switzerland.  Our only seed there Charlie Robertson plays a French lad who was ranked around 30 before not playing for 6 months last year, and on return has won a J200 and progressed well in a J300 on clay.  The tournament website promises live scores and streaming. Charlie, Viktor Frydrych and Imogen Haddad are all scheduled to play tomorrow

U14 boys R1 (L128)

(1) Mark Ceban bye

(7) Rhys Lawlor bye

U14 girls R1 (L128)

(10) Edie Griffiths bye

(3) Hollie Smart bye

U18 boys R2 (L64)

Max Stenzer (GER) v Viktor Frydrych

(16) Charlie Robertson v Tiago Pires (FRA)

U18 girls R2 (L64)

(12) Tamara Kostic (AUT) v Hannah Read

Imogen Haddad v Stella Remander (FIN)

Viktor did well to edge a tight one against a slightly higher ranked opponent given the quick change of surface for him. He is joined in the last 32 by Imogen, but Charlie lost out. The under 18 event has J300 points. The link for live scores and streams (click the video links for matches on the 4 streamed courts) is here .

Hannah is first on one of the streamed courts tomorrow, but she and Imogen lost their doubles today.

U18 boys R2 (L64)

(12) Tamara Kostic (AUT) v Hannah Read
Imogen Haddad d. Stella Remander (FIN) 6-2 6-4

Hannah lost as expected given she was playing a seed comfortable on clay, but Charlie/Viktor didn't take to court because of poor weather. Tomorrow Viktor is 4th on the streamed court 4. Imogen's opponent has lost to Brits in her last 2 events (Mimi & Given) but those defeats were on grass.

U18 boys R3

(12) Mihai Alexandru Coman (ROU) v Viktor Frydrych

U18 girls R2 (L64)

(12) Tamara Kostic (AUT) d. Hannah Read 7-5 6-2

(7) Cara Maria Mester (ROU) v Imogen Haddad

A disappointing day in the under 14 championships, with our quartet seemingly struggling to adjust quickly to clay. Mark was a notable exception though

Laurentiu Albert Cristian Badea (ROU) d. (7) Rhys Lawlor 6-4 6-2

R3

(1) Mark Ceban v Paul Hiorteland (NOR)

U14 girls R2

Hollie's opponent was always going to be tough. She has an ITF junior ranking in the 400s, and made the quarterfinal at Les Petits As at the start of the year.

Viktor is currently on one of the streamed courts (court 4 - use this link to go direct to the court) having taken the first set 6-4 against the seed (3-3 in the second)

Excellent win for Viktor breaking in the ninth game and holding to 30 to win 6-4 6-4. He is putting together a good series on clay as well as grass. Imogen lost earlier on.

Interesting to see the third Tsitsipas brother Pavlos playing the event.

Pavlos seems to enjoy playing junior tournaments - this is his 19th junior ITF of the year. His ranking is modest considering how much he is playing (356) but he has taken out a seed here.

U18 boys R3

Viktor Frydrych d. (12) Mihai Alexandru Coman (ROU) 6-4 6-4

R4

Andrii Zimnokh (UKR) v Viktor Frydrych

U18 R3

(7) Cara Maria Mester (ROU) d. Imogen Haddad 6-4 6-1

Thanks for the insight. I note that she appears to be the second highest ranked ITF player here (behind top seed Popa) so a tough draw as you say.

Mark is through to another encounter with Jules Rimbaud, who he beat in the Bolton semis. Their match is second on the streamed court 2. Streaming links are here

U14 R3

(1) Mark Ceban d. Paul Hiorteland (NOR)  6-4 7-5

R4

(1) Mark Ceban v (16) Jules Nicolas Rimbaud (FRA)

Mark won the duel but losses for Viktor in singles and doubles mean that British interest remains only in the under 14s. Mark will be second on Centre tomorrow against the last home hope. Mark/Rhys exited the doubles but Edie/Hollie are still in.

U18 R4

Andrii Zimnokh (UKR) d. Viktor Frydrych 6-4 6-1

U14 R4

(1) Mark Ceban d. (16) Jules Nicolas Rimbaud (FRA) 6-2 6-4

QF

(1) Mark Ceban v (5) Tomas Krejci (CZE)

Is Ceban that good or just big for his age? The difference in size between him and his Japanese opponent at Wimbledon was ridiculous.
