Boys & Girls: Wimbledon under 14 Invitational Singles, grass (week 28)

The draws for the second under 14 invitational singles are now on the Wimbledon website

The boys event sees Mark Ceban seeded 1, Rhys Lawlor 8, along with Leo Wright and the draw is here   The format is 4 groups of 4 round robin, probably taking place over 2 days, followed by knock-out matches, with group winners facing off

The girls event features Hollie Smart as 4th seed, but in a group with the young Czech girl who beat her fairly easily at Roehampton.  The American Kristina Pernickova is top seed, while Edie Griffiths is the other Brit taking part.  The draw is here

The round robin starts tomorrow with Brits monopolising court 4. Edie opens against the top seed, followed by Mark, Rhys, Hollie and Edie again. Leo is third on court 5

Edie lost very easily to one of the US Penickova twins

Rhys won, as did Leo, and Mark. So well done, lads

Hollie gained a second win by the narrowest of margins - 13-11 in the match tiebreak, which means that if she can avenge her Roehampton defeat to Jana Kovackova she would qualify for the final 4 knock-out. Edie lost her second match though. Tomorrow it will be 2 matches for the boys and 1 for the girls to complete the round robin

Go Hollie! I expected Edie to do well too.

And Lawlor scraped a win too, 12-10 in the MTB

I assume these matches were indoors somewhere?

How good is Mark Ceban? From what I see and read he does seem a good prospect moving forward.
He already looks more like a 16 year old than the 14 he is.

He won Les Petits As which basically makes him the best (or joint best) in the world biggrin

But, yes, his height at a precocious age might be a factor

Leo lost his second match on a match tiebreak. Essentially they have completed all the second matches of the round robin by going indoors. Mark and Rhys are both in a position to qualify for the top 4 knockout if they win their final round robin matches, but they will both need to overcome the other seed in their groups.

Do they play the final group games this evening or is it a double up process tomorrow? Thanks

They have scheduled the final round robins first or second tomorrow on various courts (none this evening).  It depends I guess on when they complete those as to whether they slot in the first knockout matches later tomorrow, or ask everyone to play 2 knockout matches on Sunday, with a better forecast.
