RE: Girls: 2023 Wimbledon (Week 28)

Unlucky for Hep that, as 9vicman mentioned earlier, her reward for beating a seed is a match against someone who is stronger than most of the seeds, certainly in terms of WTA ranking, who we saw beating Hannah in a top-class match earlier in the year.

R1 (L64)

(Q) Greta Greco Lucchina (ITA) d. (WC) Imogen Haddad 6-2 6-1
(10) Tereza Valentova (CZE) d. (WC) Hannah Read 6-1 6-2
(8) Ena Koike (JPN) d. (WC) Gabia Paskauskas 6-0 6-1
Ranah Akua Stoiber d. (Q) Malwina Rowinska (POL) 6-3 6-7(5) 6-3
(WC) Hephzibah Oluwadare d. (12) Nina Vargova (SVK) 2-6 6-4 7-5
Mingge Xu d. Cara Maria Mester (ROU) 7-6(6) 6-4
Ariana Anazagasty-Pursoo (USA) d. (Q) Daniela Piani 6-2 3-6 6-2
(11) Ella McDonald d. Martina Genis Salas (ESP) 6-3 6-2
(13) Emerson Jones (AUS) d. (WC) Given Roach 6-1 6-4
(WC) Mika Stojsavljevic d. Wakana Sonobe (JPN) 5-7 6-3 6-1
Hannah Klugman d. (9) Federica Urgesi (ITA) 6-2 6-2
(WC) Isabelle Lacy d. (Q) Roisin Gilheany (AUS) 6-4 6-2

R2

Ranah Akua Stoiber v (16) Charo Esquiva Banuls (ESP)   Court 8 match 3
(WC) Hephzibah Oluwadare v Nikola Bartunkova (CZE)   Court 8 match 1
Mingge Xu v (6) Kaitlin Quevedo (USA)   Court 4 match 2
Rebecca Munk Mortensen (DEN) v (11) Ella McDonald    Court 4 match 1
(WC) Mika Stojsavljevic v (4) Lucciana Perez Alarcon (PER)   Court 4 match 3
Malak El Allami (MAR) v Hannah Klugman    Court 8 match 4
(WC) Isabelle Lacy v (2) Clervie Ngounoue (USA)   Court 4 match 4

Some tough second round draws. Very difficult for Mimi and Isa, although Isa beat Perez Alarcon at Roehampton, so not impossible for Mika.

Lacy has beaten Brengle and Golubic this grass court season and should have beaten Bolsova. If she can beat them, surely there's no one she should be afraid of in the juniors. Appreciate it's never that simple, and the top juniors play a different way to these players.

Would be really good to see one or both of Mimi and Isa get through.

I see that Mimi could play Hep in R3 and Isa could play Hannah in the QF.

Clervie may be second seed but she hasn't been having it all her own way recently. And a lot of her wins have been tight matches. Not to mention Mika had match points against her last week.

So I think Isa has every chance.

Ranah is a bit unpredictable but Charo is very much a clay courter and is a decent draw

I don't think Hep has much chance

Mimi is playing the girl who beat her at Roland Garros - but it was three sets, and on clay (obviously) so let's see what grass gives

Ella is playing the girl that Gabia P beat easily last week which, without being rude to Gabia, is not a great result....

Mika's opponent is class, but again very much a clay player

As is Hannah's opponent

So, not saying they'll all win () but I think those are all playable matches (apart from maybe Hep's)

Mimi, Hammah K and Hep have all done very well.  Isabelle as well.

I'm loving all the optimism. I hope you're all right. It's been such a good effort for so many of them to get through the first round, playing (largely?) higher ranked players. It would be so enjoyable to see some of them continue through.

Ranah Akua Stoiber v (16) Charo Esquiva Banuls (ESP) Court 8 match 3
(WC) Hephzibah Oluwadare v Nikola Bartunkova (CZE) Court 8 match 1
Mingge Xu v (6) Kaitlin Quevedo (USA) Court 4 match 2
Rebecca Munk Mortensen (DEN) v (11) Ella McDonald Court 4 match 1
(WC) Mika Stojsavljevic v (4) Lucciana Perez Alarcon (PER) Court 4 match 3
Malak El Allami (MAR) v Hannah Klugman Court 8 match 4
(WC) Isabelle Lacy v (2) Clervie Ngounoue (USA) Court 4 match 4
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Clervie Ngounoue has an 80% win rate on grass so far. Isabelle Lacy also has an 80% win rate on grass though! I think there is danger here.
Nikola Bartunkova lost to Sonay Kartel in 3 sets in April in the women's and beat Hannah K on hard court. Unless Hep can pull something out of the bag, of course.
Charo Esquiva Banuls, only 15, beat Isabelle Lacy but it was on clay - as CD says, she's a clay player, so hopefully Ranah will come through.
Kaitlin Quevedo, as CD says, beat Mimi previously on clay. She also beat Hannah K on clay too (it always surprises me when anyone beats Hannah!)
Rebecca Munk Mortensen, as CD says, lost to our Gabia last week. However, she's beaten Charo, Kaitlin and Wakana Sonobe (on clay) previously although lost to Ranah (hard court).
Lucciana Perez Alarcon - I don't know much about her other than, as she says, they don't have grass in Peru and that she's on the Grand Slam Development Programme. I think she might be a dark horse here at Wimbledon.
Malak El Allami, not much to say on this player. Don't really know of her.

Should be interesting.

Thank you so much TW18 - have we ever had so many junior girls through to round 2 in a Slam before?

I see courts 4 and 8 seem to have become the two junior show courts. Which is good, how big are those courts in terms of capacity. Theres a tendency to end up putting the finals into much bigger arenas and I wonder if that can scare some players at that point and they are best using the main court 4 for the final rounds when they get there?

No real surprise with Hep's match - she lost the first set 2-6 - she played some good tennis in parts, too many errors, of course, but that was partly because a lot of her best shots came back with interest

But Ella's is another matter ::((

Very close first set - at 5-5, Ella has two break points, can't take them, and then plays a dreadful last game to lost the first set 5-7

Ella is too passive. Waiting for her opponent to make mistakes and she isn't, she is hitting some great winners.

Absolutely. Completely agree. She's putting nothing on the ball at all.
