RE: ATP Masters Series Hamburg: Murray v Monfils

No dream, it really happened, Andy really just won a match in two sets, dealing out a breadstick in the second

The ATP scoreboard made it disappear pretty quickly as well, strange, maybe they didn't want us to realise!

Brilliant. That match-up had me worried.

I can now go and get on with things with a broad smile on my face!

I doubt if I'll be able to check on the Greg match, give him a cheer from me, anybody who follows it please.

Nope you're still awake Mad !!!

Monfils makes yet another ue and it's game, set, match Murray 6-4, 6-1 !!!

What a scoreline !

It was a good solid performance for Andy and his first clay-court masters series win but Monfils was terrible, spraying ues everywhere. Andy played a very clever game hitting lots of slices and keeping the ball low and giving Monfils no pace which the Frenchman could use to attack. When trying to generate pace for big winners on a slow court you have to be very quick on your feet and move well to set yourself up for the shot, however Monfils consistently looked tired and didn't do that.

There were some moments of brilliance from Andy, some athletic returning and a couple of superb lunge volleys at the net. His serving was average, never particularly hurting Monfils.

This was a match in which Andy didn't have to do that much to win, at times in set 2 he was just putting the ball in play and letting Monfils make all the errors.

Blake will be much more of a test

Monfils made 35 unforced errors, which is shocking for a top 30 player over 17 games.

He averaged just over 2 unforced errors per game.

Thanks for that David/Peter. Shame he couldn't add to that list today.

It's David [at the moment]

Judy Murray is there as is Andy's manager Patricio Apey. Hopefully Judy can help Andy come up with some good tactics to use against Blake.

Andy's post-match interview with Sky Sports' Chris Bailey [Transcript exclusive to this site and www.andymurraytennis.org]:

On defeating Monfils:

“I played pretty solid and knew what I wanted to do. He’s the sort of player that likes to sit back, play a lot of topspin and doesn’t really go for too much when it’s level. I was trying to go for a little bit more on my forehand, and once you get ahead against him you try to take more risks and he doesn’t really like it so much as you saw at the start of the second set. You have to get the balance right between knowing when to play solid against him, and when to go for it. I think I got that quite right.”

On mixing up his play and finding the right balance:

“I think it will get easier the more matches I play. I wasn’t doing it so much at the start of the year in some of my matches, but against Chela at the Australian Open, I played completely the wrong way, and was right out of my comfort zone last week. In Rome it was not a great match…I took a few too many risks, but today I got it right. When you win matches like that, if you go out and get the balance right and lose, you don’t try to play like that in your next match, but I got the balance right today and came out on top, and I’m sure I’ll do the same against Blake in my next match.”

On James Blake:

“I think everyone knows he’s got one of the best forehands in the world. His backhand’s obviously not as good, but it’s improved a lot. I think if you can get the ball high up to his backhand, and try and bring him to the net…use some slice and vary the pace. Don’t give him too much rhythm. I think I can cause him some troubles, but it’s going to be a very difficult match, and if he gets on top of you, he can really make you do a lot of running – but it’s going to be a tough match.”

Coaching situation:

“I haven’t spoken to Larry (Stefanki). I haven’t actually personally spoken to any coach. My agent’s spoken to three or four people – Larry’s obviously on the list. He’s a great coach. He’s worked with Rios, Kafelnikov, obviously Tim, some Grand Slam champions, and he would be a good person. But I think he’s going to be working with Gonzalez. He approached him before Patricio (Apey) had spoken to him, so unfortunately I won’t be getting coached by him, so the search goes on.”

To Chris Bailey (who offered to coach Andy):

“I was supposed to tell you, I was signing some autographs after the match, and there were some gorgeous young women telling me that they love you to pieces and they really wanted to meet you!”

Chris Bailey’s response: “Really?”

AM: “I think you signed one of their autograph books actually”

CB: “It must have been a long time ago Andy!”

AM: “Yeah, it must have been, yeah!”

A straightforward opening round victory for Andy Murray against Rome semi-finalist Gael Monfils. Watched by mother Judy looking sophisticated in posh spectacles, fashionable tracksuit top and jeans, Andy's controlled performance was too much for a tired Monfils in a match of long rallies and unforced errors.

Down 0-40 at 1-1 Monfils found two big serves but was unfortunate to see a net-cord take the ball wide for the first break of the match. A lob just long after a clever drop shot allowed Monfils to break back as Andy's serve failed him from 30-0. A desperately poor game from Gael followed as Andy broke to love to lead 3-2, held comfortably, then produced two inspired running passing shots and an incredible winner returning a smash as he broke again for 5-2.

What should have been a comfortable set became a real struggle as Monfils broke then saved four set points on his own serve with aggressive serving and huge forehands to win each point before Andy even had a chance to get into the rally. Serving at 5-4 Andy finally found enough first serves to take a patchy first set on his sixth set point.

During a long opening game to the second set Monfils served and volleyed successfully to save break point, the court surface crumbled as Andy ran for a drop shot on his second opportunity to break, then after a fierce backhand down the line created a third chance, Monfils' error finally decided the game.

From then on Monfils adopted a more aggressive approach, dominating many of the points as he increased the pace on his forehand. Sadly for him the accuracy was missing as unforced errors long, wide and into the net, gifted Murray a 5-0 lead. Serving for the match Andy saw Monfils punish a couple of second serves on match point before errors from Murray allowed Gael to break. At deuce the following game Monfils crashed one forehand long then another into the net to end a match of little quality. The final score 6-4 6-1.

While both players hinted at their potential, the slow playing conditions, the early morning start, the dreadful state of the court and the lack of atmosphere contributed to a disappointing contest. Murray dictated play for much of the first set, using the forehand to good effect moving Monfils around the court. Drop shots created numerous opportunities to finish rallies but Andy's touch deserted him as lobs and soft passing shots missed or were volleyed for winners. Strangely, Andy seemed reluctant to employ his trademark backhand down the line and while his serve was improved from the Volandri match it was patchy at best.

In the head to head Monfils appeared to possess the bigger weapons but lacked the consistency required to take advantage. At the net he impressed with solid volleying and good movement. His speed around the court allowed him to reach every drop shot Murray attempted though that particular battle ended even overall. And his forehand, when it went in, looked a special shot. Andy made use of his variety, deploying the slice backhand on occasion to deny Monfils pace, and his tactical play was generally excellent though the execution of the final shot was at times disappointing.

The second set was all about Monfils. Speaking afterwards Andy explained how Monfils tends to play cautiously when the score is level but will take more risks when behind. With the wind increasing as the match progressed Andy decided to play safety first tennis; kicking in his first serve and getting the ball back in play until Gael struck yet another forehand long. As a tactic it worked against this opponent but it is hard to imagine other players being quite so generous.

So without playing his best Andy did enough to win. On the positive side his play was well suited to the conditions and the opponent. Looking ahead to the next round he may need to raise his game if he is to progress further.

I don't think we can draw too much from that match because of how poor Monfils was but it was obviously important for Andy to get a decent win under his belt.
