Week 25 - WTA250 - Birmingham, Great Britain Grass

Bektas just lost in 3.... heartbreaking 'cos it looked like she'd won a couple of games ago but a let was called.

QF: DART, Harriet (GBR) 134 (CH=84 2022) v POTAPOVA, Anastasia ( ) (4) 21 =CH

Anastasia looked like losing her R2 match but finally got through on a 3rd set tie break.

I saw McNally serve for it 5-4 in the final set and she absolutely bottled it.

Interesting match tomorrow Potopova has a good game, Harriet will have to use her greater grass experience and frustrate her

And, again, that's the sort of thing we should note when we think our players are no good at closing matches out or have 'mental game' issues

Basically I'm with you in thinking that that is one of those cliched old chestnuts that doesn't up to scrutiny.

Yes I agree, you just notice things more when you predominantly follow your home players.

Potapova was the only Russian in the main draw in Birmingham. As a 15  year old she was the junior Wimbledon champion of 2016 so could play on grass at a young age.

QF:- Freya Christie (GBR) / Ali Collins (GBR) CR222 (111+111) [WC] LOST TO Marta Kostyuk (UKR) / Barbora Krejcikova (2) CR32 (30+2) (CZE) 3-6 7-5 5-10

Good effort against the no 2 seeds. Only watched the MTB though,so just going by the scoreline.

I was slightly surprised they went ahead with the MTB given how dark it was.

I don't think it was that dark on court - it was in the shadow of the stand and there was still a bit of sun on the top of the stand at the far end. The stream wasn't that clear earlier anyway - it took me until the change if ends in the earlier match to identify all the players.

Katie’s defeat by Zhouu.

I expected the inevitable trolls on social media after Katies defeat to Zhu, who after all is in the top 40. At 7-5, 7-5 it must have been hard fought.

Yesterday, I note Zhu beat Linette, ranked 20, I believe, 6-3, 6-0. Gives much more credence to Katies performance and result.

Zhu is a decent player and we need to bear in mind that Katie would have been suffering from physical and mental fatigue after the events of Nottingham. I still think that Katie would have her if they were drawn together again in Eastbourne or Wimbledon

Zhu reached the 4th round of the Australian Open in 2023 including a win over Sakkari.
