Week 23 - ITF W100 - Surbiton, Great Britain Grass

Marni played a good first set, but just failed to break from 40-0* at the start of the second.

6-3 *1-2

Isabelle and Alice have gone three.

Isabelle comes out on top in two long games early in the third and leads *3-1

Marni got herself into bother for no reason at all, but saved a set point on her serve and then broke back for *4-5

Those games give Isabelle the mental lift she needed and she comes through 6-2 in the third.

Oh Marni. Marni, Marni, Marni. Lost the plot a little there and she's into a third set too. 6-3 5-7 0-0*

Freya and Ali 6-4 *2-3

Yes, a few errors by Marni and the set was gone, after recovering well from a poor start.

The big GB doubles about to start as the girls arrive on court 1

Freya and Ali got a bit panicky in my view in the MTB. As it started to slip away it all got a bit uptight and they lose 4-6 6-3 10-4

Oh Marni. I really don't understand how she managed to lose that one, goes down 3-6 7-5 6-4

With so many Brits fairly remarkable to only have one all-GB match. Hopefully 6/7 wins out that lot.

Lissey and Liv win 6-1 7-6(4)

Lily and LJB were very poor. Easy 60 63 win for Eden and partner.

Lissey and Liv come out on top after an entertaining doubles match. Not at their best, but too good for Hev and Harriet in the first set particularly.

Lily and JLB were totally outclassed.

Very impressed with Isabelle, and Marni should have won. JB coaching Isabelle.

Yes, she came through well and kept her nerve after she was broken in the first game of the final set, and had lost three games in a row.

My sense is she's got a bit more variety to her game than this time last year: bit more comfortable if she finds herself at the net and more sliced shots and a couple of lovely drop shots.

Shame for Marni. Didn't see any of her match but she seemed to be in control for a lot of the match.

Trivia (largely thanks to Emily herself for this!) - in R1, Emily is due to take on the player whose mother her (Emily's) sister was named after.

Great to see EWS in a singles MD again, the start of an Indian summer for her perhaps?

Yes, huge respect for Emily

And well done to Millie - that was VERY close. Kempen is WTA 186 and Millie pushed her right to the wire. There were rather a lot of errors from both women, but that's the style of their tennis. Great effort and hopefully, the start of a great summer for Millie

Marni's loss, though, was just frustrating beyond belief. That was her match. With some really super play. And then she just sort of threw it away. Completely unnecessary.

Great start from Isabelle, taking the first set on a tiebreak against Brengle. As noted yesterday she's developed a wicked drop shot which has won her a few important points. Definitely taking the game to her opponent. Also kept her head when Brengle was complaining about a ball that was called out (looked out to me on the screen). Just played her game and pulled out a couple of excellent serves to calm the nerves.
