Boys & Girls: J100 Loughborough, GB - indoor hard (Week 11)

The first of the Loughborough swing of events.

J100 is an attractive level for a lot of our well-ranked players

The first round of qualis took place today

The only real match of note was that 2009-born 13 year-old Hollie Smart (the LTA's pick, after Hannah who is a different league entirely) is playing her first ITF event. She won today 6-0 6-1

And then Lucia lost in the next round.....

The qualifiers for the main draw are:

BOYS: Luke Hoyland; Josh Aston; Dilhan Wasantha; James Ashworth

A full house of Brits. I don't know the others but I really love watching Dilhan play - great ball player

The qualifiers have all got decent draws on paper - only Dilhan got a seed, and that's the 8th seed

Only two wildcards which go to: KourosAnssarizadeh; Mark Ceban

GIRLS: MiaPohankova (SVK); Leticia Romanova; Aimee Knowles; Sarah Copley

I hae a soft spot for Leticia - I like her play, her ability; her physique - and (just gut feeling) I don't think life has dealt her a silver spoon so she's got my support

There are four wildcards in the girls that go to: Tegan Bush; Elizabeth Evans; Ciara Moore; Heidi Crncan

Half of the boys' R1 results are in

Thrilled to see that little fave, Dilhan, who was a qualifier, got an easy win over the 8th seed

Qualifier James Ashworth also won,

As did wildcard Kouros Anssarizadeh

Only 2 girls' results in:

Mika got edged out 7-6(7) in the third set by Jaqui Ogunwale, which is a big result

And Hannah Rylatt beat the Czech 5th seed very nicely

Mark Ceban (born 2009) got his first ITF juniors win today

And I think it's his 14th birthday today too

But nice start, in a J100 event

The final girls' results are in

Well done to 14 year-old wildcard, Tegan Bush, for beating Brooke Black

And 14 year-old Leticia Romanova (the girl I mentioned I follow) who won her match too

And Giulia Lesa (who has an intersting style of game, great use of legs and low centre of balance, but a little whippy in the arms) who chalked up a very nice win over the 7th seed

(Disappointment though for Daniela Piani who was seeded 4 but lost against a Slovakian qualifier)

BOYS

The 'shock' news is that top seed, Henry Searle, got beaten by some pretty lowly ranked French player (but French kids often don't play much ITF junior stuff, as they don't need to, and so are falsely ranked, so well possible that applies here)

My little fave, Dilhan, got another win.

Mark Ceban put up a very good effort but lost in two tiebreaks to Kyle McKay, seeded 5

Well done to Ilias Worthington who beat the Polish 6th seed

Young Ben Gusic Wan is also through

GIRLS

In a rather spooky echo of the post above:

The 'shock' news is that top seed, Hannah Read, got beaten by an unseeded Swedish player

Congrats to Tegan Bush (2008) who won another round, beating the 8th seed

And to my little fave, Leticia (2008) who also won through

Marelie Raath (seeded 2) just scraped a win over Erin Pearce.

Jaqui O is also through. And Flora Johnson too

I believe Felix is the son of England rugby world cup winner Iain Balshaw who moved to Biarritz in 2009

Brilliant info, mazzy !

I'll put him on my 'possible switch list'

And go and look him up on the French sites

Cheers

Young Balshaw got the better of my Dilhan :(

But, hey, that's life

So the semis are:

Felix Balshaw (FRA) v (4) Henry Jefferson
(2) Phoenix Weir v (3) Ben Gusic Wan

I like the tennis of both Phoenix and Ben, so that's a win-win

In the girls, our two 2008-ers lost to the older players. As did Flora (2007). And Given beat Jaqui in a long three-setter.

So it's GB v SWE in the semis:

(3) Given Roach v Bella (SWE)
(2) Marelie Raath v Tilda (SWE)

It's funny how many young French players there are with British connections: Evan Furness, Alice Robbe, Scarlette Hetherington and now Felix Balshaw.

There are also quite a lot the other way round i.e. young GB players with strong French connections: Arthur Féry, Georgina Hays, Hugo Coquelin (I've never actually read anything about any French family but he must have, with a name like that, surely? ) ...

I guess it's because our two countries are so close and there's a lot of movement between the two (less now, of course, but ......)

The doubles boys SFs are 100% GB players

Which is nice

Henry & Phoenix v Ben GW & Jay J-H
Joe M & Kyle McKay v Seb H & Ilias

The girls has:

Marelie & DEN v Dani & Mika
Abby K & Given v Hannah Rylatt & CZE
