I don't think it does in the sense in which you meant it:
Some common synonyms of beguile are deceive, delude, and mislead. While all these words mean "to lead astray or frustrate usually by underhandedness," beguile stresses the use of charm and persuasion in deceiving.
I certainly have yet to see it used in that way. It's a question of nuance.
How about: We were expecting an easy match for Cam but the difference in ranking proved deceptive and instead we're getting an enchanting match, how's that? I've got no idea why this is so important to you but pm me if you want the name of a good literature forum.
Anyway there's life in Cam yet. He's broke back and we're back on serve at4-3 to Daniel. The commentary seem to think Cam is 'wrestling back control'.
TD breaks Cam and saves the set but Cam breaks again and so serves for the second set a second time at 6-5. You get the feeling that if Cam gets through this he wins the match. Yesss the second set is Cam's 7-5. TD looking much the tireder of the two now in the fierce midday heat.
Taro Daniel is playing a very tight, efficient game, beguiling the huge ranking gulf between the two players. Cam is going to have to work to win this first set off him. 4-3 Cam.
To be fair, even though he's a qualifier, he managed to beat Roberto Carballés (WR 79) & Matteo Berrettini (20/WR 23) on his way to the last 16...
I hope he doesn't reach the L16!
Fortunately, he didn't, but he put up quite a fight:
L32: (10) Cameron Norrie WR 12 defeated (Q) Taro Daniel (JPN) WR 103 by 6-7(5) 7-5 6-2
There were still a few flashes of brilliance from Taro Daniel in the last set but he'd become a little ragged and weary while steady, solid Cam just steamed on over the line.
With the absent Rafa dropping his 600 RU points from here last year, Cam is so far up one place in the live rankings to live #11 ( though he himself did reach the QF last year after his title success in 2021 ).
Rafa will drop out of the top 10 in the rankings for the first time since April 2005 when then aged 18
Well done Cam! Phew. Daniel beat Evo a number of times in the past couple of years if I recall and maybe also Andy? So good to see him despatched with ease by Cam
