Week 10 - WTA1000 - Indian Wells, USA Hard

Probably as good a draw as Katie could have hoped for.

What an impressive start to the season for Swan. Already beaten three top 100 players this year and surely in with a chance to make it four against Bucsa.
Just shows that if her body holds up instead of continually letting her down she would have so much potential to move forward into the top 100.

Also read somewhere that Emma is not 100% certain yet to take to the courts here.
You get a real sense of nothing going right for Emma.
Injuries and illness aside surely we need to see her soon making an impact again.

I read it as she withdrew from the "Tens" to enable her to be fit to take to the court.....hope so anyway hmm

Why?

Of course we do in time but as you say - injuries and illness. She has largely not progressed because of these rather than aside of these.though I do think the coaching changes have probably been a further issue. For a lot of the time it's been one thing after another. And pulling out with appendicitis ( err tonsillitis even ) in Austin there did seem a chance that it might be an issue for here.

The talent is still there and has sporadically been shown, the desire and attitude appear to be still there, she actually looks stronger physically this year, and there is still so much time.

That recent photo had her with a large brace thing on her left wrist - which was new to me - I didn't know she had a left wrist issue
Some people said it might be preventative but I think that's unlikely - it was a photo with a kid, outside of playing, it looked like something she was wearing all day
But if there are more problems, I'm with Indy, I don't see its anything more than a shame.
Of course she might quit if she gets fed up to the back teeth of being injured.
But I think she's a huge way off that at the moment

 Absolutely.

After all it took years for everything to come together for Jo Konta, and Emma has already won a GS.

No one is likely more frustrated than Emma but it's really important to get health and fitness right and not to overstrain the body.

"pulling out with appendicitis in Austin" - it was tonsillitis - not as serious !

I think Jo's career had a completely different trajectory than Emma's. Emma won a Grand Slam  as a teenager whereas Jo after 7 years as a pro had only spent 2 weeks in the top 100. Jo only really made the grade when she was 24. Her rise started at Eastbourne in 2015 and her career really took off by reaching the US Open last 16 that year. Not quite at the summit of winning a Grand Slam which Emma did.

It's unfortunate for Katie B, not quite getting over the line against Tsurenko. With the qualifying matches behind her she might have been able to take a win or two in the main draw. The loss means more when a player is competitive and playing reasonably well, and it was an opportunity to compete against the best. For Harriet and Jodie, it seems like their preparation for the IW qualies must have been disrupted in some way, and so they weren't able to perform as well as they would like. Hopefully they will soon be back to their best. The BJK cup tie with France is not too far away, and there will be competition to be selected for that. It'll be interesting to see whether Annie K decides that Raducanu and Swan should be left to compete on the tour, this time.

Katie is up a break in the first set, 2 breaks to 1. Broke for *1-0, broken back for 2-2* but has now broken again.

*3-2

They met in Madrid in 2015 and Monzon in 2018 with Katie winning in two on both occasions.

 Katie lost

I think Katie had a set point in set 1 and 6 set points in set 2. There is a serious problem in closing out amongst all the GB women - team sports psychologists urgently needed

Yep, was just going to mention it.

She lost by 7-6(6) 7-5. I was only intermittently checking the scores and was thinking someone else would have popped in with more info

Apparently she missed out on 7 set points in all. 1 at 6-5* in the first set TB, 1 at *5-3;in the second set and finally 5 more at 5-4* ( including 3 at 40-0* ).

She had 6 breaks of serve in total against 6.

Edit: ah, we're agreed on the SPs
