Girls: Australian Open, hard (Week 4)

Lily Fairclough is the girl who Imogen Haddad beat in the Thai Grade 2 final in October. If successful (second match court 13) Ranah is likely to play Ella Seidel, who is the highest WTA ranked player in the quarter (579) and easy winner against Ranah's doubles partner and 4th seed in round 1

R2

(WC) Lily Fairclough (AUS) v (13) Ranah Akua Stoiber

Doubles R2

(1) McDonald/Udvardy (GBR/HUN) v Jones/Sonobe (AUS/JPN)
(3) Daubnerova/Stoiber (SVK/GBR) v Munk Mortensen / Sidorova (DEN/***)

Insomnia got the better of me tonight and am delighted to report Ranah served up double Bakery products in her rain interrupted match.

The last 16 is quite open - a fair few seeds have dropped and Ranah has a non seed next. Chance for a run?

Unfortunately she has Ella Seidel in the next round, who's largely playing adult tennis and has a current ranking of 384, so will be tough.

Would love to be wrong but I also think her run probably ends in the next round.

McDonald has a great opportunity for a title in the doubles at least. In fact, McDonald and Stoiber could face each other in that draw, which would be nice because it'd give us a guaranteed finalist. I don't know accurate/justified the seedings are in these junior draws though.

Although a lot of top seeds have fallen, the two mentioned in my early post (Andreeva and Korneeva) are still in. They are not in Ranah's quarter though. Seidel is a strong opponent, but her singles ranking is as per my post earlier (579) - Nix has quoted her doubles ranking wink  Her match with Ranah is second on court 5

R2

(13) Ranah Akua Stoiber d. (WC) Lily Fairclough (AUS) 6-1 6-0

R3

Ella Seidel (GER) v (13) Ranah Akua Stoiber

Sorry David. Oops. It made it exciting though when I saw she'd won!

Still a very good win for Ranah.

Yes, I tried to watch  that but either missed it or there was no stream.  I checked the   'point by point' thingy -    they were ahead, having won the 1st 3 points in the MTB,  then it was neck and neck,  and then they lost the last 3 points in a row.  Bet they were gutted.

Watched the first two sets of the match - Ranah played well. It was very 50/50. The German girl hits a big ball, but also makes a lot of errors - she has a good game for seniors if she can reign it in. Ranah served well, defended nicely, and hit lots of winners too. As I say, could've gone either way, Ranah was just a bit more disciplined (from what I saw).

Good chance of making the semis here!

Definitely a good opportunity to reach the semis. Anyone watching the streams tonight might like to keep an eye on the match scheduled at the same time between Renata Jamrichova and Mirra Andreeva, as the winner of that will play (and be favourite) against the winner of Ranah's QF. Both are in very good form and met in the Traralgon semi (the Slovakian having trounced Ella en route). Andreeva is a prodigious talent, a 15 year old former U12 Junior Orange Bowl winner who picked up titles last year at $15K, $25K and $60K to move into the WTA top 300

QF

(13) Ranah Akua Stoiber v Weronika Ewald (POL)

Doubles R2

(1) McDonald/Udvardy (GBR/HUN) d. Jones/Sonobe (AUS/JPN) 7-6(3) 6-4
Munk Mortensen / Sidorova (DEN/***) d. (3) Daubnerova/Stoiber (SVK/GBR) 6-2 3-6 [10-7]

QF

(1) McDonald/Udvardy (GBR/HUN) v Jamrichova/Urgesi (SVK/ITA)

Ranah won, 3 and 3, into the semis where she plays Andreeva. Ishii v Korneeva is the other.

Ella lost her opening set in the doubles qf.

Well done Ranah, great event for her!
