No joy for Gordon in Japan as he and Gerard lost their doubles semi.

World Team Cup starts May 1.

Here are the entries

www.itftennis.com/media/9657/2023-bnp-paribas-world-team-cup-world-group-entries.pdf

Britain is seeded 5 in Mens, out of 16. 6th in womens out of 12. And 2nd in juniors out of 8.

We didnt qualify for quads.

The fact we are 5th mens seeds suggests one of Andy or Gordon arent playing, we would be much higher if both played. But teams arent announced just yet

The Wheelchair World Cup is an event we have great historical success in:

Mens - Champions in 2008, 2009, 2015, 2018, 2019

Womens - Never won but Runners up in 2010, 2013, 2014

Quads - Champions in 2002, 2014, 2017 - sadly, we havent qualified for this years event

Juniors - Champions in 207, 2008, 2013

So lots of success, but not since pre covid times. Not sure we will repeat that this season, Juniors is probably our best chance of glory, but we arent seeded top in any of the events.

Well the good news is the provisional seedings mentioned in a post above seem not to be accurate - the British teams that are playing turn out to be our strongest available ones in mens and womens.

In the mens, this is a title winning potential squad and is quite exciting

Mens event Captained by Martyn Whait

Alfie Hewett
Gordon Reid
Ben Bartram

Womens event Captained by Alex ****ram

Lucy Shuker
Cornelia Oosthuizen
Abbie Breakwell

Junior event Captained by Marc McCarroll

Joshua Johns
Ruben Harris
Oliver Cox

The updated provisional seedings above show are juniors as 2nd still, the women have improved to 3rd seeds from 6th and the men are 2 seeds as opposed to 5th.

we have strong teams turning out and could medal in all three events we have qualified for, and maybe actually win one of them.

From the ITF

The provisional seeding for the mens, womens and quad events is based on the combined rankings of the top two singles players from each nation, using the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Ranking of 24 April 2023.

The provisional seeding for the junior event is determined by the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Committee. The Cruyff Foundation Junior Ranking of 24 April 2023 is one of the factors taken into consideration.

In the event that the combined rankings are the same for two different nations in any one event, the higher seeding is given to the nation with the highest-ranked individual player.

Following Sundays draw and Mondays opening ceremony, three days of round-robin pool competition will take place in each of the mens, womens, quad and junior events.

Thereafter, teams will contest semi-finals and knockout draws to decide final placings, with the women's and quad finals scheduled for Saturday 6 May and the men's and junior finals scheduled for Sunday 7 May.

The 2023 BNP Paribas World Team Cup will be live streamed daily, including on the ITFs YouTube channel.

The draws and final entries are settled although not yet published and todays order of play doesnt work as a link on the itf site.

Some last second team drop outs, often an issue at wheelchair level,
We end with 15 teams in the mens, 10 in the womens, 7 in juniors.

In mens, there are 3 groups of 4 and one of 3, top team in each make the semis.
In womens, it is 2 groups of 3 and one of 4. The top teams in each make it to the semis as well as the runner up in the group of 4, which happens to be Britains group.
In juniors it is a group of 3 and one of 4, top two in each go to the semis.

We arent in quads.

Play starts today

Gb men play Chile today and the juniors play France. We should expect comfortable wins in both. Women dont appear to be playing but that isnt always a reliable guide!

Gb men beat Chile with the loss of no games ! 4 bagels, must have been hungry!

Gb juniors lost just 4 games in the 4 sets of singles to France.

GB women got their world cup off to a good start, winning 3-0 over Brazil and losing 6 games in just 6 sets.

Perfect records all round for our teams, but the opposition is relatively weak so far
