How is Scarlett Hutchinson doing at Fairfield? Are they in a lower conference?
Scarlett doesn't get selected to play that often, and when she does she doesn't get too many wins. But she got a rare singles and doubles outing yesterday and won both, although the context to that is that the opponent she was playing in singles and the programme Fairfield were playing are winless this year against Div 1 opponents. I saw she was made captain this year and assumed she was doing well but perhaps it is primarily a non-playing role?
The battle to be the highest ranked GB men's player goes on. In this week's rankings, Johannus Monday remains the lead Brit, climbing 1 place to #4. Oliver Tarvet moves up to be the 2nd highest ranked GB player, moving up 2 places to #5. Oliver was awarded his 4th singles player of the week for the West Coast Conference this week. He's claimed that award as his own it seems. Jack Pinnington Jones climbs 1 place to #7, but teammate Jake Fearnley drops 3 places to #9. Jake has been injured for most of this month, playing only a couple of matches and they have been at the court 2 position, with 1 loss to the #3 ranked Micah Braswell and 1 unfinished while a set down. While Jake has been injured Jack has moved up to the top court for TCU and is now 6-2 since taking that position on 11 March.
4. (5) Johannus Monday (Tennessee) 5. (7) Oliver Tarvet (San Diego) 7. (8) Jack Pinnington-Jones (TCU) 9. (6) Jake Fearnley (TCU)
Tennessee and TCU have 3 duals remaining and San Diego 4 before we move on to the conference championships.
In the women's, Millie Rajecki remains at #5 in the singles rankings. Her ranking points have dropped off some bit over the last month and there's a bit of a gap to those above her. Her remaining singles opponents in regular season play are likely to be #14 Alexa Noel (Miami), #46 Vic Allen (Florida State), #53 Carol Lee (Georgia Tech) and #43 Miyuka Kimoto (Syracuse). It seems, given Danny's very helpful explanation on how the rankings work, that if Millie is to stand any hope of moving back up the rankings, a win against Alexa Noel on Friday will be crucial. On a side note, Millie is 1 win away from the milestone of 100 college career singles wins, a feat achieved by only 3 other women in the history of the NC State programme.
And here are the April 2nd womens D1 rankings (previous list rankings in brackets )
There will be a 64 draw in NCAA singles individual championships and 32 in doubles . Selection based primarily on rankings but automatic for conference highest ranked, most of whom will be in top 64 and top 32 anyway. So probably upper 50s in singles and upper 20s in doubles will be high enough to get in. Still plenty of time for things to change !
5 (5) Millie Rajecki
37 (26 ) Angelica Blake
46 (63) Vic Allen
56 (61) Grace Piper
115 (121) Destinee Martins
Doubles
15 (13 ) Rajecki/ Zampardo
26 ( 24 ) Adeshina/ Cabezas
29 (n/r) Allen / Bissett
37 (25 ) Cross / Spink
54 (42 ) Piper /Fry
35 (44 ) Reuter/ Honer
69 (73 ) Staff/ Ray
Team
1 (1) Oklahoma State
2 (2) Michigan
3 ( 3 ) Pepperdine
4 (5) Virginia
5 (4) Stanford

Based on Dannys estimate above that players need to be in the 50s or better to get into the NCAA event, it looks like we could get 3 or 4 women. From Lambdas post we seem to have an amazing number of men in top 10, thats fabulous to see - how many of our men are in the likely positions to play in the NCAA in total (Danny estimates you need to be in the upper 50s, presumably that means between 55 and 60?
The other men I think we have in the singles top 100 are 19. Toby Samuel (South Carolina) 58. Lui Maxted (TCU) 76. Will Jansen (North Carolina)
Lui's ranking seems impressive considering he hasn't played any ranked opponents. He started the year at position 5, moved up to 4 in mid March as part of the shuffling up when Jake was absent with injury and has played a couple of matches at 3 in the last week. He actually has the most wins for TCU this year with a 14-2 record [6-1 at pos 5, 5-1 at 4 and 3-0 at 3]. I'm wondering if he's the highest ranked not to play in the top 2 positions. I might check that later.

Thanks Lambda - so it looks like we could have , in singles, 5 men and 3 women in NCAA with 1 more of each on the cusp?

If anyone wants a bit of British tennis action on a Sunday night, Millie Bissett & Vic Allen v Millie Rajecki & partner followed by Vic Allen v Millie Rajecki is streaming here (select court 1). Starting now.
Or if you fancy some mens action instead, JoMo will be going for his 100th career singles win. Stream here. Doubles first and singles in about 40 minutes
That was a great win for Vic. 6-2 6-2 over Millie. Should push her into top 30 in tomorrows rankings. Millie got the win in doubles though .The singles loss might affect her ranking a little but not too much given her win over Alexa Noel a couple of days earlier.
