To tie up my round up of the 1st week of conference championships. South Carolina gave Kentucky a good dual, but ultimately narrowly losing out to causing an almighty upset. The doubles point was arguably a key point in this dual and was won by Kentucky. With the doubles on courts 2 and 3 finished with 1 win apiece, it came down to the newly formed pairing of Toby and James on court 1 against the #7 ranked pairing for Kentucky. The match was fiercely contested and came down to a tie-break. Unfortunately for Toby and James, after the first couple of points Kentucky ran away with the tie-break. Toby was the first to finish on court 1 in singles against #35 Baddi 4 & 2 (who seemed more interested in cheerleading the other courts in the 2nd set). Another win apiece on courts 3 and 4 put the dual at 2-2. James Story was next to finish, but was never really in his match losing easily 4 & 1 to put Kentucky ahead. The match was clinched on court 6. Had Toby and James won the doubles it would have come down to a nail biter on the last match on court 5 which was on serve in the third.

In the ACC championships, we have an interest in both teams contesting the final with James Hopper for Virginia (VA) and Jamie Connel for Florida State (FSU). After a tightly contested final, Florida State won their first ever ACC Championships 4-3. The doubles point went the way of Virginia, with James Hopper finishing first winning his match on court 1 with a bagel before Connel cancelled that out winning on court 3 6-2. In singles Jamie Connel got FSU's first point of the night 6-4 7-6(0) win against his #51 von der Schulenburg to put the score at 2-1 to Virginia. Virginia got a further point to put them 3-1 ahead and 1 win away from the championship title. FSU then won the next 2 singles to level the dual at 3-3. It came down to court 1 featuring the #4 and #5 ranked players where FSU would win 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 7-5.

For this week, I shall be following Oliver Tarvet and others in the West Coast Conference championships and Sofia Johnson in the Sun Belt Conference championships -Sofia's ODU incidentally are regular season champions for the 2nd year running with, apparently, a 29 match winning streak in conference play dating back to 2018. With the time difference to the western side of the US I'm not sure if I'll be watching these.

Sofia Johnson (ODU, Junior) has been named Sun Belt Conference women's player of the Year and received All-conference First Team honours for singles and doubles. smile

ODU write-up:
Currently 19-8 in singles going 7-2 in league play all at No. 1 in the lineup. She debuted in national rankings at #122 on April 9 and moved up to #118 on April 16. Johnson had a nine-match winning streak from Feb. 10 to April 7 which included wins over Ole Miss, Florida State, Iowa State (2), Kansas, VCU among others. She won consecutive Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week honors to start the season. In doubles, she is 12-4 with Lidiia Rasskouskaia having wins over Florida State, Penn State, Iowa State, VCU and Princeton.

Johannus Monday (Tennessee) named 2024 SEC Player of the Year for the second season in a row and subsequently was selected to the All-SEC First Team. He was also 2023 SEC Player of the Year
The senior is the fourth player in conference history to receive player of the year accolades in back-to-back seasons. The Hull, England, native is the highest-ranked SEC player, standing second nationally in the latest ITA rankings. He boasts an impressive 22-2 record atop UT's singles lineup, including a perfect 10-0 mark in conference action. The senior has notched a stellar 17-1 record vs. ranked opponents in 2023-24.

Those features on the conferences have been really good Lambda. The PAC 12 event is also under way and plenty of British interest in the event both men and women, notably the players from Stanford and USC. A pity the matches are not live streamed until the final.

On a side note Angelica at Stanford is close to emulating Millies achievement at NC State of 100 college career wins. She is at 94 with the remainder of the PAC 12 event, the NCAA team event and the individual event to come. Hopefully she can reach the magic Number ! Would be great if we had 2 players reaching that milestone this year. Emily Arbuthnott also achieved that when she was at Stanford.

Stanford women dominated the final to win the last ever PAC-12 championships. Angelica (at position 1) losing only 1 game in her match in the final. Stanford men (with Max Basing at 3) lost their final to Arizona. Southern California (USC) (with Grace Piper at 3 and Immi Haddad at 6) lost in the semis to Stanford. Following the disbanding of the PAC-12 Stanford will join the Atlantic Coast Conference (where many of our other top women are) in the summer and USC will join the Big 10 conference.

In the West Coast Conference championships, San Diego (with Oliver Tarvet at 1) won the men's event and Pepperdine (with Jasmine Conway at 6) continued their dominance of the women's event, which they've held since 2013. Portland women (with Sally Pethybridge at 2) and Saint Marys (with Iman Khan at 1 and Olivia Rook at 5) both lost in the opening round. Pacific (with Peter Alam at 1) lost in the semis and Portland men (with Oscar Brown at 1) lost in the opening round to Pacific. San Francisco (with Erin Richardson) did not compete and have discontinued their tennis programme with the completion of their season.

Old Dominion (with Sofia Johnson at 1) play in the final of the Sun Belt conference championships today.

And here are the likely round of 16 womens match ups based on seedings, though all 16 of those teams have 2 rounds to play at home this coming weekend . The round of 16 Super Regionals is played the following weekend with the surviving 8 teams going to Oklahoma State for the quarter finals onwards starting May 17th.followed by the individual tournament.

Meanwhile, Rajecki, Allen, Blake, Johnson and possibly Piper are all likely to feature in tomorrows individual singles championships selections . Sofia by virtue of being the highest ranked player in her Sun Belt Conference.

Hopefully there are 1 or 2 upsets and it isn't just the seeds that make it to the super-finals, but these are the men's match-ups should the seeds make it through the regionals this weekend.

(1) Ohio State v (16) Mississippi State
Vanderbilt (Hugo Coquelin, Oscar Jenson, Callum Rendle) are in Ohio State's regional and will play Oklahoma State in the first round

(8) Columbia v (9) Arizona
Auburn (Finn Murgett) is in Arizona's region and will play Pepperdine in the first round

(5) Kentucky v (12) Harvard
Big East winners DePaul (Thomas Giles) play Kentucky in the first round

(4) TCU v (13) Duke
How far TCU progress will depend on player fitness with them being impacted by injuries to key players in recent weeks.

(3) Virginia v (14) NC State
In form South Carolina (Toby Samuels and James Story) are in NC State's region and play ODU in the first round. If there is going to be an upset in the regionals SC defeating NC State could be it. SC is ranked 15 and NC State 14 in last week's rankings. Virginia (James Hopper) should make it comfortably to the super regionals.

(6) Wake Forest v (11) Oklahoma
Stanford (Max Basing) are in Oklahoma's regional and play SMU in the first round. Wake Forest (Luca Pow) play South Carolina State in the first round and could potentially meet Georgia (Freddy Blaydes) in the 2nd round.

(7) Tennessee v (10) Florida State
Florida State (Jamie Connel) and Tennessee (Johannus Monday) should make it through to face each other in the super regionals. UNC (Will Jansen) are in Tennessee's regional and play Memphis in R1. Not sure Will will play as he's been out with an injury (shoulder, I believe) the past few weeks.

(2) Texas v (15) Texas A&M
San Diego (Oliver Tarvet) are in Texas A&M's regional and will play Baylor in the first round. Texas A&M were ranked 17 and San Diego 18 in last week's rankings.

The championship gets underway May 3-4 with the first and second rounds of the team competition. Final site action includes the quarterfinals through the championship final May 16-25 at Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Singles competition beginning May 20 and the doubles competition beginning May 21 will also take place at the final site. Hoping for a few upsets - love it when the underdog wins and hoping the Brits shine smile

Virginia has won the last two division I men's tennis team titles and has six total in Virginia program history which ranks third all-time. Southern California leads with 21 DI men's tennis team championships with their last title victory coming in 2012.
